Job Description
The Carpenter Technology Corporation Hartsville Operations" located in McBee, South Carolina, is a mini-mill supplying a variety of sizes and specifications of high-quality round, square and hexagonal stainless steel bars for distribution. Carpenter Technology acquired Talley Metals in 1997 to increase manufacturing capacity within the corporation's core Specialty Alloys Operations division.
MECHANIC I
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to housekeeping, cross training and operator level maintenance in support of equipment operation. Responsibilities also include attention to safety according to specific training and safety rules.
Studies blueprint or layout on work-piece to visualize machining required, and plans sequence of operations. Selects method of holding work-piece. Lifts work-piece manually or using hoist, and positions and secures it to holding device such as machine table, chuck, centers, or fixture. Verifies work-piece position. Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and cutting tool (bar tool, rotary cutter, or abrasive wheel) for each operation. Positions and secures tool in tool-holder (chuck, collet, or tool-post). Moves controls to position tool and work-piece in relation to each other, and to set feeds, speeds, and depth of cut. Starts machine, turns hand-wheel to feed tool into work-piece or vice versa, and engages automatic feeding device. Turns valve handle to start flow of coolant against tool and work-piece. Observes operation and regulates tool position and action. Verifies conformance of machined work-piece to specifications. Measures, marks, and scribes work-piece to lay-out for machining. Devises ways of clamping work-pieces and makes special jigs and fixtures as needed. May assist maintenance mechanics/electricians in trouble-shooting and/or installation of repaired/fabricated part. Devises, implement, and maintain Preventive Maintenance program for the machine shop tools and equipment, including support systems such as air supply, lubrication, and coolant systems. Responsible to learn and adhere to all company and common-sense safety procedures and to use available safety equipment as appropriate. Responsible for housekeeping in the machine shop area. Works on nonmetallic materials. Assists in the training of less experienced machinists as well as other mechanics/electricians.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIRED
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and up to two years of on-the-job experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to demonstrate skills through testing and practical application before moving from one skill level to the next.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and depth perception. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
PREFERRED FOR THE MECHANIC I
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
Willing to work in a fast paced, every changing work environment.
Mechatronics degree preferred
