Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing a variety of employment-related legal duties, such as providing advice to internal stakeholders, proactively managing employment-related risks, performing analyses and responding to legal claims, managing disputes, performing research, and conducting training in an effort to protect J. J. Keller business interests and meet legal requirements. This in-house counsel role is also responsible for coordinating matters with outside counsel, as needed. To be considered for this position, the candidate would need to reside in the State of Wisconsin; periodic travel to the corporate office in Neenah, WI would be required based on business needs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Consults with Human Resource Services (HR Services) as requested on labor and employment matters relating to recruiting, labor relations, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, background checks, discipline, terminations, wage and hour, pay equity, and compensation.
  • Collaborates with HR Services to ensure federal, state, and local compliance in US employment law by developing and maintaining policies that reflect both legal requirements and industry best practices.
  • Assists HR Services to perform analyses of labor and employment matters and then deliver recommendations.
  • Manages disputes through negotiation, mediation, and legal documentation such as demand letters, settlement agreements, and position statements.
  • Manages employment-related litigation activities, including overseeing outside counsel, managing budgets, coordinating investigations, and facilitating the discovery process.
  • Evaluates corporate communications as needed, internal and external, for legal exposure.
  • Identifies and ensures Company compliance with applicable labor and employment laws and regulations, and provides guidance on company policies, forms, procedures, and best practices.
  • Performs legal research and interprets/summarizes findings.
  • Prepares and conducts in-person and virtual training sessions on various employment law topics, such as FMLA, ADA, EEOC, and NLRB.
  • Carries out responsibilities in a fair, ethical and non-discriminatory manner.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • At least three years of experience as an attorney with a focus on labor and employment law.
  • Experience working with legal counsel in other countries a plus.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions a plus.

Other Skills/Qualifications:
  • Admission to the State Bar of Wisconsin or eligible to be a registered in-house counsel in Wisconsin.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local labor and employment laws and regulations, such as FMLA, ADA, EEOC, FLSA, and Workers' Compensation.
  • Sound judgement and business acumen.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to perform complex analyses and legal research, and interpret these for non-attorney business partners and decision makers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.


Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily in a home office or standard office environment. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for extended periods of time. Occasional travel to industry and training events may also be required, depending on assignment. Position requires you to reside in the State of Wisconsin.
