Lead Commercial Buildings Energy Consultant

Locations: Denver (Golden, CO), Washington DC (Reston, VA), or Remote Continental US

ICF is seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated candidate to help state and federal government clients implement and evolve their energy efficiency, decarbonization, and sustainability programs. This position will preferably be based in our Reston, VA headquarters or Golden, CO office in a hybrid work environment. Continental US based; remote candidates may be considered. Successful candidates will support the implementation of high-profile public-private partnership programs to drive energy efficiency and emissions reductions across government, education, commercial, multifamily, institutional, and industrial markets. They will be part of a team that builds and maintains relationships with key market actors, reviews and analyzes energy, water, and emissions data, develops marketing material that recognizes market leadership, and collaborates with other team members and clients to develop national and regional strategies to increase participation in energy and decarbonization programs.

What you will be doing . . .
  • Coordinating with clients and other team members to develop local, regional, and national strategies to influence the market and increase participation in voluntary energy, energy efficiency, building electrification, and decarbonization programs
  • Conducting research and analysis of energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, and decarbonization programs and policies
  • Developing communications, outreach, and training resources, including newsletters, case studies, website content, webinars, and in-person events
  • Conducting outreach to energy and sustainability managers
  • Supporting partner recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing support to maximize program participation
  • Maintaining detailed records in a customer relationship management system
  • Providing technical assistance on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
  • Assisting with project management tasks including project deliverables, program staffing and budget management
  • Managing and co-managing projects
  • Managing a small team of staff


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline (e.g., environmental studies, engineering, public policy, science, business)
  • 5+ years relevant experience in public and/or commercial buildings sector energy efficiency and sustainability programs


Experience including:
  • Building energy/water use benchmarking and ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
  • Implementing energy efficiency savings measures for commercial buildings or government sustainability offices
  • Building benchmarking and building energy/emissions performance standards
  • U.S. commercial buildings sector, especially the key stakeholders helping building owners and managers in meeting ENERGY STAR program requirements for benchmarking customer buildings using Portfolio Manager and gaining ENERGY STAR certification (e.g., energy service companies, architecture / engineering firms, sustainability consultancies)
  • Energy efficiency measures for commercial buildings or government sustainability offices
  • Project and program management
  • Mentoring or people management


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a related discipline (e.g., environmental studies, engineering, public policy, science, business)
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in public and/or commercial sector building energy efficiency and sustainability programs
  • Experience with ENERGY STAR, DOE Better Buildings/Better Plants, LEED, and/or other efficiency/sustainability tools and program platforms
  • Familiarity with the development and delivery of public-private voluntary partnership programs
  • Project management training (e.g., PMP) and experience
  • Experience writing reports, articles, case studies, or other communications materials
  • Experience working with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software systems

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:
$92,986.00 - $158,076.00
