Principal Software Maintenance Engineer

The Red Hat Experience Engineering (XE) Sustaining Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software Maintenance Engineer to help lead a new team aimed at improving the long-term product experience of our Red Hat OpenShift customers. In this role, you will work closely with Product Engineering to deliver extended product maintenance work, including handling bugs and CVEs in extended life streams of Red Hat OpenShift. You'll be actively driving all aspects of Red Hat OpenShift maintenance for a subset of product components focused on software development that goes beyond the normal maintenance phase of Red Hat OpenShift minor releases. You will co-lead the patch review process, the development and execution of backports and test plans, and the creation of automation tools to improve the efficiency, flexibility, and quality of Red Hat’s patch delivery to customers. To succeed in this role, you’ll need to have the ability to think creatively and adapt to rapid change, as well as an eagerness to learn new things, and to innovate for process and quality efficiency.What you will do:Guide the development of new Red Hat OpenShift product maintenance offerings, aiming to make Red Hat a global leader in long-term product experience.Drive daily activities of product maintenance engineering teams, serving as a regional and global expert on Red Hat OpenShift product issuesResolve and proactively address critical issues that have an impact on long-term regional or global business success of Red Hat OpenShiftWork within the Red Hat OpenShift portfolio and be responsible for the delivery of maintenance streamsLead and collaborate with developer and QE counterparts, product and project manager, and release engineering teams across the globe to ensure the development and delivery of fixes meet the schedule requirements and high quality standards expected and required by Red Hat customersDiagnose the root cause of failuresBackport CVE and bug fixes to stable release streamsResponsible for the coordination of multiple teams involved with patch deliveryDevelop, maintain, and monitor tests and onboard automated tests into a continuous integration workflow as much as possibleDevelop onboarding and training for new team membersMentor team membersWhat you will bring:Outstanding debugging, troubleshooting, and analytical skills5+ years of experience in software engineering and/or quality engineeringAbility to work Hybrid in Raleigh NC Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering field, or relevant professional experienceExperience developing code at scale on complex source control structuresDemonstrated patience and execution when working on detailed tasksAbility to collaborate and communicate effectively with a global teamMulti-tasking skills and ability to deliver consistently under tight deadlinesFluent written and verbal communication skills in EnglishExperience with the following are considered a plus:Experience collaborating in open source software communitiesExperience developing and maintaining enterprise production softwareSolid skills and background in Red Hat OpenShift or a similar Kubernetes distributionFamiliarity with DeploymentConfig, BuildConfig, image registry, or image streamsExpertise programming in Go and/or PythonExperience with agile software methodologies including test-based development, test planning, test cases design, test script automation, and documentationExperience with cloud computing, e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCPExperience using GitLab and Git in contributor and maintainer rolesExperience writing and debugging CI testsExperience with CVE systems and related solution delivery processesExperience with platform observability tools including monitoring, logging, and profilingAbility to collaborate with development engineers, understand priorities, understand code risk, meet deadlines, have a strong sense of responsibility, and work with minimal supervisionThe salary range for this position is $125,760.00 - $207,530.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.Pay TransparencyRed Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
