The VP, Research & Development - Microbiology for Beckman Coulter is responsible for strategic leadership of new product development and sustainment within our Microbiology business. Areas of responsibility include Hardware Engineering, Assay Development, data science, software Engineering and test, development science, Algorithm and PMO Team.
You will be a part of the Microbiology senior leadership team and report to the President of the business. Successful leaders in this role collaborate closely with other members of the Senior Leadership team applying broad industry knowledge and comprehensive understanding of different product development systems, theories and practices to drive operational excellence for the R&D organization.
This position is based in Sacramento, CA. A successful leader will be able to work on-site with ability to travel 25% of time.

The salary range for this role is $250K - $300K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay. We offer comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance and 401(k) to eligible employees.

Essential Responsibilities:
- Be the strategic and operational leader of R&D, providing technical and organizational leadership, while directing the resolution of highly complex or unusual business problems applying advanced critical thinking to product development teams
- Develop strong differentiated product roadmaps in conjunction with other business leaders, ensuring
- Ensure delivery of agreed NPI roadmaps within time, cost and quality standards; utilizing Danaher Business System (DBS) tools to drive effective sustainable processes and problem solving
- Identify and lead large-scale transformation initiatives which will improve cohesive and effectiveness of R&D structure & operations and actively searches for best-in-class technologies to support and develop innovation roadmap
- Act as cross-functional champion between Program Management, Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Clinical Affairs, Operations and R&D teams and negotiate with senior leaders across the business and influences the opinions of others within the business unit and in external organizations
- Partner closely with the IP team to proactively implement an IP strategy, including patent rights and trade secret protection, for new and future products
- Accountable for R&D budget planning and management while relentlessly focusing on attracting and developing talent, building organizational capability and high-performing, diverse R&D teams.
Essential Experience and Qualifications
- Masters' or Doctoral Degree in life sciences, engineering, sciences or related discipline with 16+ years of experience - Includes 6+ years managing people.
- Significant experience in R&D/product development in a medical device regulated field is required while with scientific and R&D experience in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases are desirable
- Experience in designing product development strategy & managing set of concurrent NPI projects of varying complexities
- Experience of managing mixed hardware, assay/reagent, and software development
- Broad understanding of modern technologies and development processes spanning hardware, firmware and application software including digital technology and augmented reality
- Ability to frame and solve complex problems, including problems that require broad perspectives and innovative solutions with proven track record in leading transformation and building strong delivery focused R&D teams
- Proactive and data-driven decision maker; results and delivery oriented with ability to perform under pressure
- Energetic and proactive leader with sufficient gravitas to influence cross-functionally, build key relationships at all levels and drive change with excellent communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to deal with complexity
