We are seeking a Manager, Business Development to join our Toronto office.

Reporting to theDirector, Business Development, you will be a key business development adviser for the Edmonton office. The successful incumbent will provide strategic business development support of key business development initiatives to enhance the groups' profile and revenue potential that align with firm-wide business strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, execute and maintain strategic business development and marketing plans for practice groups to support identified firm priorities;
  • Conceive, champion, communicate and carry out strategic and innovative business development initiatives of the practices and professionals in the regional offices to enhance revenue generation opportunities from their existing and potential clients;
  • Work with members of the National Markets team to coordinate effort and collaborate in executing national, regional and local initiatives, including those related to RFPs and other formal new business pitches and marketing campaigns. Track ROI of those initiatives by way of recommending and implementing with the lawyers follow-up efforts that will contribute to revenue generation and growth. Assist with experience/expertise database to enable cross-selling;
  • Provide direction in connection with the organization of local, regional and national client events, sponsorships, practice and industry group conference calls, and a range of other firm, office and Industry/Specialty Group BD activities;
  • Develop formal processes to generate leads from various sources (web, events, marketing campaigns, media and PR, sponsorships etc...);
  • Identify and provide leadership with respect to enhancing joint sponsorship opportunities undertaken with locally-based organizations and/or referral "partners" that will put Miller Thomson lawyers in front of prospects and continue to build the firm's profile within the business community;
  • Work closely and collaboratively with regional BD Managers and other BD resources to support the firm's national BD priorities, and those of the Industry and Specialty Groups. This entails providing them with:
    a) Support in identifying and evaluating new business opportunities and targets,
    b) reporting summaries of relationship building initiatives with the firm's key referral sources.
  • Assist legal professionals with client account management activities with the goal of strengthening client relationships;
  • Provide business intelligence and competitive intelligence on various external tools to assist with business planning
  • Establish KPI and provide business development dashboards to each practice or industry group in order to track progress; analyze them and make recommendations for improvement if necessary;
  • Work with the national CRM team to promote its effective use among the practices and lawyer groups to achieve their BD goals. This will include providing guidance around how best to organize the information in the system to support their BD initiatives, identify cross practice and cross office opportunities and generally increase the quality and reliability of the information relating to their existing and potential contacts;


What you'll bring:

  • University degree required, with a major in marketing, business or communications preferred;
  • Minimum seven (7) years of work experience within a professional services (law, accounting or consulting firm) environment;
  • Marketing and BD planning experience in a professional services environment;
  • Management experience;
  • Superior time management and organizational skills, with the ability to proactively problem-solve and manage competing priorities in a demanding, fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; Bilingualism an asset;
  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of our Markets' team by collaborating with colleagues at all levels, facilitating teamwork, working independently and identifying opportunities to develop new processes;
  • Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with lawyers, peers and business services, in a proactive and positive manner;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently;
  • Stellar client service abilities and experience working with all levels of an organization;
  • Organizational abilities with strong attention to detail;
  • Travel to Miller Thomson offices or other locations may be required as needed;
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Aderant, Lotus Notes and CRM databases an asset;
  • Comfortable with social media platforms.
