Job Summary
The controller position is responsible for the accounting operations of the company including: the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
Essential Functions
Financial Oversight
- Maintain and enforce a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
- Manage outsourced functions
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department
- Perform credit checks for new customers to determine creditworthiness
- Manage vendor and customer accounting issues that arise. Proactively inquire suppliers to submit invoices timely when needed. Research and troubleshoot vendor accounting issues and work toward resolution
- Work with CFO to protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
- Ensure accounts payable are paid in a timely manner. Initiate ACH batches and cut payable checks accordingly
- Implement controls for payables, including verification for drop ship partners and purchase order processes
- Ensure all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
- Ensure accounts receivable are collected promptly
- Post large customer payments to AR ledger using bulk import process
- Process payroll in a timely manner
- Process credit card transactions in a timely manner and reconcile credit card accounts
- Ensure periodic bank reconciliations are completed
- Ensure required debt payments are made on a timely basis
- Maintain the chart of accounts
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system, utilize paperless filing to the extent possible
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
- Issue timely, accurate, and complete financial statements. Create/maintain workpapers for inventories, accruals, prepaids, depreciation, etc. to tie out the balance sheet each month
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
- Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
- Assist CFO with production of annual budgets and forecasts
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
- Provide for a system of meaningful management cost reports
- Provide financial analyses as needed, particularly for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for annual financial statement audit
- Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Maintain sales tax compliance and sales tax certificates as required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or similar field, or comparable experience
- Five years' relevant accounting and finance experience
- Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook) proficiency. Strong Excel skills desired.
- QuickBooks and NetSuite experience preferred
