Summary:
The Lab Assistant I collects blood from all patients, performing venipuncture or capillary puncture using approved techniques, instructs patients in the collection of urine specimens, processes and delivers specimens to the appropriate sections of the Laboratory, and collects all laboratory specimens using proper identification and tagging procedures. Answers the phones, receives orders for testing and places those orders in the computer.

Answers the phones, receives orders for testing and places those orders in the computer.


Responsibilities:
1. Greets and interacts with all patients in a professional manner.
2. Performs patient preparation and specimen collection. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture using approved techniques. Collects and processes urine drug screens. Collects the proper amount and type of specimen.
3. Receives order from provider.
4. Enters order into LIS and applies correct diagnosis and billing code. Enters additional data associated with specimen collection including patient information to ensure accurate documentation and billing.
5. Verifies correct test and patient identity.
6. Collects specimen(s). Accurately identifies and labels specimen, records the date and time of collection according to established departmental procedures.
7. Prepares specimens for transport and delivers specimens to the correct technical area in a timely manner.
8. Receives and distributes test results.
9. Operates HIS, LIS and EPIC technology proficiently.
10. Provides information or assistance to appropriate personnel (teammates) regarding patients who present difficulties.
11. Collects specimens from patients who are seriously injured whenever physically possible.
12. Informs supervisor of shortages of supplies or consumables.
13. Answers all phones using professional phone etiquette.
14. Uses appropriate interaction with and provides recommended or required services to all patients. Possesses a basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the cultural needs of all patients.
15. Maintains a safe environment for self and teammates. Applies knowledge of the principles of universal precautions, routinely and consistently makes use of these principles. Also knowledgeable of appropriate use of personal protective equipment and infection control barriers and devices.
16. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
17. Actively participates in staff meetings.
18. Participates in quality/performance improvement activities.
19. Communicates effectively and appropriately with teammates and supervisors to assure the quality and integrity of the service. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

• High School Diploma and successful completion of a phlebotomy course.

Licensure/Certification
• Certification from an accredited agency (NPA, ASCP, ASCP, NHA, National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel) required.

Experience
• At least 1 year as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Proficient in basic laboratory procedures and laboratory terminology.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to perform detailed work; work with frequent interruptions, multi-task, and problem solve.
• Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Proficient with LIS, HIS and MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly.
• Ability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for duration of shift.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.

Education
