Bay State Milling Company (BSMC) is a growing 5th generation family-owned supplier of plant-based ingredients, including grains, seeds, pulses, flours and mixes with unique nutrition, flavor and functional attributes. Our goal is to be a leading supplier of plant-based ingredients for the next generation of foods in North America and we are well on our way with some of the most innovative, nutrient dense whole food ingredients available.
Our Research & Development (R&D) team works out of a state of the art Innovation Center just outside of Boston, MA. In a modern, open and collaborative environment, we develop, analyze and apply our ingredients across a variety of food categories including commercial and artisan bread, pasta, pizza, tortillas, bars, sweet goods, snacks, and plant-based beverages. The R&D team is tasked with developing BSMC's future ingredients, and applying those ingredients in finished foods. As the company is focused on growth, we foster growth and development of the expanding Bay State Milling team to meet the changing needs of the food system and consumers. We are organized into four business units as follows: 1. Traditional Wheat Flour; 2. Gluten Free Oats; 3. Ancient Grains & Seeds; and 4. Varietal-specific solutions for nutrition and functionality.
Why we need you:
This Innovation Project Manager will play a key role in leading the development of new & improved plant-based ingredients through research, product development, commercialization oversight, and project management. New innovative ingredients help pave the way to the future for the company's growth. These new ingredients may encompass new varietals, new process technologies, or combined to create new ingredients for unique up-and-coming markets. This requires a hands-on individual who can lead grain ingredient development ("grain" here is used loosely to include grains, pseudocereals, seeds, pulses, and blends), starting in the lab, but someone who is also comfortable leading plant trials and commercialization efforts working with internal and external partners. These partners may include customers, comans, universities, equipment manufacturers or research organizations. This candidate must be comfortable managing projects from ideation through commercialization, engaging different departments and stakeholders with excellent communication along the way for project execution. This role will report to the Director of R&D and will work closely with members of our business units including marketing, sales, quality assurance, operations and leadership.

Examples of the types of ingredient innovation projects include:
- Creating a water-soluble powder for plant-based milk from a varietal-specific grain.
- Creating functional, nutrient-dense flours or powders from varietal-specific grains.
- Developing value-added ingredients from upcycled streams from the milling process.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead R&D projects, focusing on new ingredient development and commercialization of new grain based ingredients that are differentiated by functionality, flavor, or nutrition. This may include the following: Lab-scale research and testing, both analytically and in application
- Experimental design & data analysis
- Collaboration with internal and external partners such as universities or comans.
- Leading scale-up trials and ingredient commercialization at processing plants
- Customer product development
- Act as project manager to execute project progress This may include leading R&D teams or cross-functional teams with Operations, Quality, Marketing, or external partners.
- Act as thought partner with cultivar development resources to test and vet new grain varietals for commercial viability.
- Act as a technical resource on project teams through knowledge of grains/seeds/flours, plant based ingredients, process technologies, and food science principles.
- Travel within the US and occasionally outside of the US (~20% of time) for customer support, plant trials, trade shows and educational conferences.
Qualifications:
- Minimum B.S. Degree in Food Science, Bakery Science, Nutrition Science, or Cereal Science from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum 7 years of R&D experience, preferably with ingredient development in the bakery or plant-based foods space (cereals, grains, seeds, pulses, flours).
- Experience working with grains, preferably wheat or oats.
- Experience in ingredient functionality and ingredient R&D.
- Experience in finished food product development, including bread, pizza, pasta, bars, snacks, or beverages.
- Experience leading teams and working with different stakeholders to drive alignment towards goals, milestones, and project execution.
- Familiarity with food plant operations and process technologies,
