Job Description:
Onto Innovation is looking for a qualified principal level Optical System Engineer to work on the development team for our product lines of automated inspection and metrology tools for the semiconductor industry. A qualified candidate will be responsible for all aspects of optical design including: measurement sensor design, imaging and illumination lens design, tolerancing, prototyping, evaluation, testing and manufacturing support of the custom optical machine vision systems employed in Onto's suite of products. The position will support existing designs and develop new optical system solutions that satisfy the customer needs associated with the broad range of applications in the markets we serve. This requires a willingness to take initiative and collaborate with others in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities:
• Provide system performance simulation and offer general guidance for the following optical system develop activities:
o Development of optical components and modules from concept definition to release to production.
o Deriving optical specifications from system performance requirements.
o Defining requirement boundaries for peer engineering groups (Mechanics, Electronics, Control and Software).
o Optical design using Optical Design Software (Zemax or Code V) or other methods. Tolerancing optical system for manufacturability.
o Illumination design and prototyping for both imaging and non-imaging systems
• Provide a lead role in cross function activities
o Analyzing custom versus off-the-shelf component trade-off to drive design decisions for cost savings.
o Defining necessary calibrations and optical alignment schemes for system integration.
o Evaluating the performance through design and execution of experiments on product platform.
o Design, analysis, prototyping and integrating solutions into volume manufacturing.
o Hands on testing and verification of optical design performance both in lab and on tools.
o Transferring documentation package to the New Product Introduction and the Supply Chain Management groups.
o Providing technical assistance to manufacturing and customer service.
• Limited domestic and international travel.
Qualifications
• B.Sc. or higher degree in Optical Engineering or similar areas such as Physics or Electrical Engineering with a major in Optics/Electro-Optics.
• 12+ years minimum optical engineering and design experience.
• Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills with methodical approach.
• Computer image processing experience and skills strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with Zemax or equivalent optical design software preferred.
• Proficiency with LightTools or equivalent illumination design software preferred.
• Hands-on experience with complex optical systems development. Lab and prototype development experience.
• Good interpersonal communication capabilities.
• Ability to lead peers without authority.
• Capability of working independently within an intensive environment.
• Familiar with camera technologies: TDI, CCD, CMOS, PSD. Versed in evaluation criteria and methods.
• Familiar with a variety of illumination sources and design concepts: lasers, flash lamps, LEDs, halogen source. Well versed in optical standards.
