Purpose:
General Accounting
- The Controller is the Senior Leader Level individual responsible for the management of the entire accounting and financial reporting functions at The Greater Boston Food Bank including but not limited to the monthly financial reporting of two entities including an external audit and A-133 audit, restricted income reporting, grant management, budget preparation, reforecasts, financial analysis, management, and problem resolution, etc.
General Accounting
- Prepare monthly GAAP-compliant accrual-based financial statements and other financial reports for two companies and related departmental P&Ls, including multiple food cost allocations for Co-op, MEFAP, and donated to our five program P&Ls.
- Maintain the GAAP-compliant accrual accounting system for two general ledgers (GBFB and GBFB Realty), including account numbers and a detailed descriptive chart of accounts for expenses.
- Ensure that the accounting software and financial records are kept in an orderly manner
- Perform bank account and general ledger account reconciliations monthly and supervise the reconciliations done by others so that all accounts are reconciled monthly.
- Prepare monthly Restricted Income Reports by area and total Restricted Donations
- Supervise the Director of Finance, Senior Accounting Manager, AR, and AP team members.
- Oversee and audit the inventory cycle counting program with reviews at scheduled meetings.
- Participate with Department Heads as appropriate including monthly Leadership Forum meetings and be an active contributor.
- Drafting and updating function/department Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as necessary, with a review of all relevant SOPS periodically.
- Assist in other GBFB responsibilities as required.
- Manage the annual external financial audit and IRS Form 990 preparation for both entities.
- Organize the GBFB Annual Budget and Reforecast process and oversee the Accounting Department and Officer Manager's annual budget and reforecast process.
- Collaborate with Cost Center Heads / Senior Managers with the 'budget to actual' review monthly.
- Support the CFO in the annual insurance renewal process and manage all claims during the year.
- Ensure all internal controls and business practices are being followed.
- Represent the Finance Team related to new initiatives and provide feedback concerning risk and compliance issues.
- Create and maintain Company metrics that assist in monitoring operations.
- Manage and propose updates to GBFB financial policies and procedures.
- Responsible for project management as needed.
- Assist the CFO in the fiscal / business affairs of the corporation.
- Create and maintain company metrics that assist in supporting operations.
- Be an active participant in proposing solutions to problems and making recommendations for improvements

- Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet deadlines required.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting; CPA or graduate degree is required.
- Significant and demonstrated experience in accounting and accounting software, with 5 or more years of experience.
- Familiar with Windows-based software and experience within a network environment and a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
- NetSuite experience preferred.
- Interest and commitment to the cause of alleviating hunger.
- Ability to sit a minimum of 3 hours
