Senior Epidemiologist
This position requires an active Public Trust clearance or the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance to be considered.
The Senior Epidemiologist will independently perform and lead a team of professionals providing Laboratory Diagnostics, Analysis, Quality Assurance, Quality Management, Behavioral Science, Technical and Safety Support and Data Management and Analytics. Direct and guide team performance of laboratory molecular surveillance, immunological and virological support, laboratory respiratory virus sequencing and Database Management of multiple surveillance systems within NCIRD.
Compensation & Benefits:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Senior Epidemiologist

Senior Epidemiologist Responsibilities Include:
- Manage laboratory activities and evaluate program progress. Identifies problems in programs being implemented and initiates corrective action to improve program and performance.
- Design and oversee epidemiologic, research, and surveillance activities. Evaluate data collection, quality control, and data utilization methods used in these activities.
- Provide technical assistance on the development, modification, and implementation of program activities and protocols, in collaboration with collaborating scientists and public health leaders.
- Enter and track incoming specimen information in an electronic laboratory database (ELIMS).
- Perform serologic assays (IgM, IgG, neutralization, avidity), molecular assays (RT-PCR, DNA sequencing) and cell culture.
- Develop protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical reports describing work performed, data generated and laboratory results.
- Provide expert evaluation and technical assistance to national, state, local, and private public health sectors and to international organizations including foreign governments.
- Provide assay development, assay validation and data analysis.
- Perform specimen collections (blood, NP swabs) and immunizations in support of animal research studies.
- Support research activities in virology, viral immunology, and molecular virology.
- Support international laboratory testing, training and proficiency programs, quality management and laboratory safety.
- Ensure laboratory quality management requirements such as standardized SOPs, protocols, and reports are in place, maintained, and meet appropriate requirements.
- Design and implement behavioral research and programmatic work, structural, community, individual level interventions, to increase vaccine acceptance and demand.
- Conduct literature reviews from relevant disciplines and develop research protocols, quantitative and qualitative data collection instruments, data analysis plan, and reports.
- Formulate and analyze social, behavioral, and epidemiologic quantitative and qualitative data utilizing statistical software packages.
- Provide technical assistance on the analysis and dissemination of data.
- Provide expert assistance to collaborators in writing and publishing articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Provide expert assistance to collaborators in evaluating and utilizing epidemiologic and research data to enhance public health programs.
Senior Epidemiologist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
- Master of Science (MS) degree with 10+ years' experience or PhD with 7-10+ years' work experience in health science, laboratory analysis, laboratory training, virology, assay development, microbiology, or related field (public health setting).
- Experience supporting the development of daily and weekly reports on national SARS-CoV-2 strain surveillance and national enhanced SARS-CoV-2 strain surveillance.
- Experience supporting electronic collaboration, data visualization, and workflow automation tools and their administration for NCIRD.
- Experience performing data analysis and data management for supporting business needs.
- Experience utilizing data reporting technologies such as SAS, SUDAAN, Power BI, etc. available in the CDC enterprise to develop innovative reports and dashboards.
- Experience with clinical data.
- Experience working in a fast-paced public health emergency response environment, flexibility and keeping up with changing needs and requirements.
- Experience identifying gaps in existing resources.
- Strong organizational, proofreading and attention to detail skills, ensuring thorough and timely execution of complex documents.
- Effective and business etiquette communication skills, both written and verbal, to present findings and recommendations to leadership, diverse stakeholders internal and external to CDC.
- Experience working with various levels of staff and management across the CDC organization.
- Collaboration and teamwork skills to work and lead effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Must possess the ability to pass a government background investigation and obtain a Public Trust Clearance
