Kamehameha Schools is looking for a creative and team-focused senior specialist with exceptional writing skills and a commitment to deep understanding of Hawaiian culture, language, history, traditions and values. As part of a team with a passion for storytelling, you will guide the voice of the organization across various communication channels, and you will play a critical role in creating impactful content and executing communications strategies that resonate with our community and advance our mission.

Job Summary

With direction from Strategic Communications Manager, provides consultation on projects, and to other departments throughout the organization as needed, to support communications and marketing strategies, methods to enhance overall brand image, and reputation with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Counseling
  • Develops, manages and implements strategic communications plans and services for projects, assignments, or other areas as directed.
  • Provides consultation to meet public relations, marketing, development, financial goals and advance image as part of the overall Kamehameha Schools brand.


Strategic Messaging
  • Develops and implements strategic organizational as well as individual projects messaging and content for both internal and external communications channels.


Marketing, Branding, Publicity, and Promotion
  • Develops and implements marketing programs to build, enhance, and/or reinforce the positive goodwill needed for upcoming and/or existing projects.
  • Collaborates with Marketing division to ensure content is aligned to KS brand and effectively integrated.
  • Provides direction for external contractors to meet the Communication, Marketing, Branding, and Community Outreach needs with internal projects and programs


Relationship Management
  • Maintains relationships, provides proactive and strategic counsel, and support the assigned team and other business units as directed.
  • Develops and fosters external relationships with stakeholders, media and consultant and contractors.
  • Works collaboratively with all areas of the organization to integrate strategies, organization-wide campaigns, externally facing issues, and other strategic communications opportunities.


Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business, Marketing, Journalism or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years directly related work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and manage strategic communications plans and long-term projects that deliver strategic outcomes to targeted audiences. Demonstrated ability to hold sensitive information in confidence and operate with discretion.
  • Strong customer service orientation, and models leadership behavior with colleagues and clients. Highly skilled at meeting budget requirements and delivery deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively and creatively with diverse personalities and interests toward identifying and meeting a common and beneficial objective.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to review and edit the work of others and collaborate with them to produce the best product/service in a timely, effective manner.
  • Ability to transform complex and detailed information into straightforward and clear key messages that effectively communicate and accurately reflect KS's brand, position and intent.
  • Skilled at developing rapport and trust with internal and external senior level contacts to resolve issues and negotiate difficult situations for KS and/or mutual benefit.
  • Skilled in the use of all appropriate communications tools and vehicles.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Hawai'i news media; excellent knowledge of a broad spectrum of new and traditional communications technologies.
  • Working knowledge of Hawaii's varied communities and the state and local government structure in the areas of business development and/or education.
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to understand the needs and drivers of others to enable opportunities to achieve shared outcomes.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian culture and world-view as it relates to the operations of Kamehameha Schools as a native Hawaiian organization.
  • Familiarity with Kamehameha Schools' mission, vision and lines of business.


Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 25 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.


Working Conditions (including Environmental Conditions)
  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives

76,700.00 - 105,200.00 Annual

Based on the compensation range provided below, salaries are commensurate with job-related experience, skills and competencies, education, internal equity, length of work year, and other organizational needs.
