Purpose

The City of Newport is seeking a professional, hard working individual to fill the position of Recreation Leader. This position will provide assistance in hosting, planning, implementing, promoting and evaluating recreation programs, classes and special events. Help with a wide range of duties such as responding to requests for information, hosting recreation programs, assisting customers with registrations, creating marketing content, and program planning.

This is a 29 hour a week position. Must be able to work a varied schedule, which could include evenings and weekends.
Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and experience would be a high school diploma or equivalency, and 3 months of customer service, recreation, and/or office experience

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of general office procedures, public relations, customer service, computers, and the internet. Business letter writing and the standard format for typed materials. Methods and techniques of proper phone etiquette and customer service techniques. Knowledge of the principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies, equipment, basic rules, and skills involved in a variety of recreation activities. Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of recreation and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of recreation. Methods and techniques for record keeping and filing.

SKILLS: Good skills in the use of personal computers and various related software programs. Skill in the use of recreation equipment. Good time management, organization, and prioritization skills. Strong customer service orientation and skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, and strong oral and written communication skills with a variety of audiences. Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism. Strong math skills.

ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with city management, employees, Council members, parents, other entities, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups. Ability to organize, engage, and motivate youth activities, interact courteously with program participants, and solve minor problems. Coordinate activities and meet critical deadlines. Deal successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone. Understand and follow instructions. Use applicable office terminology, forms, documents, and procedures in the course of the work. This position is a frontline Mandatory Reporter. The employee must have the ability to communicate with DHS or other agencies about any related issues. The ability to understand, interpret, and apply general administrative, city, and departmental policies and procedures. Ability to multi-task, and to work with frequent interruptions. Ability to use sound judgment in following and applying appropriate laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to make accurate arithmetic calculations. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Ability to lawfully operate a motorized vehicle for City business on a regular basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age

Valid Oregon Driver's License at time of hire

All ages First Aid/CPR/AED within 3 months of hire

DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education or training in the recreation field.

Physical Demands

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 25 pounds, and rarely lift or move materials more than 60 pounds. The position may require the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 30% of the time to operate such equipment as computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and recreational equipment. The position requires the mobility to interact with and use parks and recreation equipment. The position may risk harm from physical hazards, including biohazards and obstacles in the work area.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work location may be indoors where most work occurs in a gymnasium, swimming pool, or other recreation facility. Work may also occur outdoors with exposure to all types of weather.
