Job Description
PlaceWorks is searching for an experienced planning professional to lead and grow a zoning practice, including both standalone zoning and development code updates and targeted zoning amendments as part of larger planning and urban design projects. We are seeking an individual with 10-15+ years of zoning and other relevant project management experience, ideally in both the public and private sectors. Our Planning and Design teams work in a cross-disciplinary, collaborative environment and across multiple office locations on projects where zoning is an important component. We serve clients throughout California, from high-density urban cores to suburban communities and small rural towns. We focus on integrating stakeholder input into clearly explained and illustrated regulations that are feasible and implementable. Typical work includes updates and amendments to all facets of a zoning code, including zoning districts, allowed uses, development standards, performance standards, definitions, and graphics and illustrations, parking, and signage, as well as components such as organization, administration, and maintenance of the code. This individual will also be responsible for designing and facilitating effective processes for zoning code updates that include appropriate levels of engagement with client staff, elected and appointed officials, local stakeholders, and community members.
This is an Associate Principal or Principal-level position. Associate Principals and Principals are perceived as innovators, thought leaders, and influencers in the industry with a demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and oversee staff, projects, presentations, marketing, business development, and client relations.
The pay range for this position is $140,000 to $180,000 per year, dependent upon experience and other relevant factors.
Job Requirements
You're most likely a fit if:
• You are a good listener, creative, self-starting, outgoing, collaborative, and passionate about your work.
• Managing multiple projects is second nature and you have successful experience overseeing and coordinating major components of zoning projects of all sizes within budget and schedule. You must have at least 10 years of project management experience.
• You are experienced with preparing and providing direction for the scope and content of zoning documents.
• You have an extensive grasp of evolving legislative requirements and legal precedents affecting zoning content and administration.
• You have hands-on experience interpreting and/or administering zoning requirements as public-sector staff, an applicant, or an architect.
• You are methodical, rigorous, and detail-oriented in ensuring logical and internally consistent content in your codes.
• You have strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and solid client communication abilities.
• You are experienced in marketing and business development.
• You're comfortable with public speaking and presenting-you'll be expected to represent PlaceWorks at job interviews and to coordinate and conduct presentations at public meetings.
• You're able to attend community outreach events which may occur on weekday nights and weekends.
• You are genuinely interested in working with junior staff and allow others to share in the success of projects.
• You have strong leadership and management abilities to grow, mentor, and lead staff members.
• You possess a bachelor's degree or master's degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, or related field.
• You have a current and valid driver's license, proof of automobile insurance, and acceptable MVR to drive on Company business for performing site visits and attending meetings.
**When applying to this position, please attach your cover letter, resume, and a writing sample/design portfolio as 3 separate PDF attachments. Each attachment must be under 500KB. Alternatively, you may include a link to your writing sample/design portfolio if it exceeds 500KB.**
