As the Outside Sales Engineer, you will represent Taft Engineering with integrity and a focus on driving sustainable growth in both sales and profit. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering Sales, you will help expand our customer base, build lasting relationships, and promote Taft's technical products and services. You will also review all bid documents for projects related to your accounts and oversee quotations, purchase orders, submittals, and other relevant documents, ensuring all processes follow Taft's procedures.

You Will:

  • Engage with customers to assess customer needs and sell Taft's technical products and services to meet those needs.
  • Manage and grow client accounts, developing and nurturing long-term relationships with existing clients while growing new accounts for the benefit of the company.
  • Identify and secure new business within both new and existing accounts by identifying opportunities for expansion.
  • Maintain product knowledge and stay up-to-date on all Taft products, providing comprehensive product knowledge to customers to support their decision-making.
  • Deliver presentations, creating and delivering professional-level product and educational presentations tailored to customer needs and industry standards.
  • Help with marketing materials, developing and maintaining presentation content, marketing materials, and resources to support the sales process.
  • Provide engineering support, offering product engineering assistance to both Taft employees and clients, ensuring customer satisfaction and technical accuracy.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, being a liaison between vendors, manufacturers, contractors, and engineers, ensuring the smooth coordination of equipment quotations, submittals, ordering, and shipments.
  • Follow sales processes, observing Taft's sales plans, policies, guidelines, and quotas to achieve sales targets.
  • Create quotations, using quotation software to produce quotations for all Taft products.
  • Qualify bid opportunities, using online construction bidding software and other tools to identify and qualify prospective bid opportunities for Taft products.
  • Analyze construction documents, applying your engineering knowledge to analyze commercial construction drawings and specifications, incorporating Taft products into project designs.
  • Review purchase orders, ensuring customer purchase orders align with corporate policies and working with customers to resolve any conflicts.
  • Maintain profit margins, ensuring the sales of products meet corporate margin standards, and working with management to address any variances before presenting to clients.
  • Manage product files, organizing and maintaining essential documents, including contact information, product updates, marketing materials, and sales strategies.
  • Participate in training, assisting with and participating in Taft Engineering's sales and service training events, either in-office or off-site.


You Have:
  • A Bachelor's degree and/or 4+ years of experience in Engineering, Engineering Sales, or Technical HVAC Sales.
  • Professional level of mathematical, verbal and written skills
  • The ability to present to both small and large groups.
  • A strong technical understanding of products and applications, with the capacity to explain complex concepts to clients.
  • Proficiency in basic Internet software, CRM software, and order processing systems.
  • Willingness to spend 75% of your time on sales calls, including driving and occasional air travel, with 25% of your time spent in an office environment.


The expected salary range for this position is $85,000 - $100,000 yearly. Actual compensation will be dependent upon individual skills, experience, qualifications, and applicable laws.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk, and/or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Work in both office and manufacturing environment. May occasionally be required to perform job duties outside the typical office setting.
