This Opportunity

WSP USA is searching for a Lead Geologist for the Los Angeles and Orange County business area! The position is to be based in the Costa Mesa office. This person will provide high level technical assistance and guidance for the collection, identification, compiling, and analysis of geological data from various media (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air/vapor). Plans and executes subsurface investigation projects, due diligence projects, and other environmental investigations. Ensures that documentation and recommendations accurately describe the results of geological analyses and address risks. Assists project leadership with environmental site assessment, corrective measures, identifies contaminants, and treatment, disposal, and/or onsite remediation activities. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact
  • Direct and supervise technical assignments including collecting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from soil sampling, soil gas sampling, groundwater sampling, boring logs, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • Conduct environmental site assessments.
  • Lead site investigation, drilling and excavation oversight, and monitoring of groundwater and extraction well installations.
  • Direct a team and perform geologic/hydrogeologic interpretation of data.
  • Prepare comprehensive work plans, technical reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret geologic, hydrogeologic, and chemical data.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Develop action plans for mid to larger-scale environmental control project and programs.
  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
  • Manage tasks and projects including budgets and schedules.
  • Train and supervise junior staff.
  • May travel to project sites primarily in California.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working as a Geologist.
  • PG (California).
  • Proficient with geological research, investigation, technology, measurement tools, software, and techniques.
  • Proficiency with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., and mitigation programs.
  • Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
  • Experience in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
  • Experience with evaluation of vapor intrusion and sampling soil gas per DTSC guidelines.
  • Experienced with various drilling methods (mud-rotary, sonic, hallow-stem auger, ARCH, and direct push) including soil and groundwater sampling.
  • Experience installing groundwater monitoring wells, remediation wells, and soil gas probes.
  • Experience writing proposals, work plans, groundwater monitoring reports and well installation reports.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Highly proficient with technical writing.
  • Effective at coordinating and assertively directing others in the field (drillers, excavation, utility locators, and others) to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear tight-fitting respirator/ Fit for Duty Exam / Medical Exam.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree is preferred.
  • Essential professional licensure/certification.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $99,700 - $155,000
