Litigation Paralegal (Newport News)

We are looking for a skilled Paralegal to be the backbone of our litigation team on the Peninsula. Our litigation paralegal works closely with two attorneys to assist with matters that may be pending in General District or Circuit Court.  You will be responsible for the coordination of all the details before, during and after trial. The successful candidate will be able to provide assistance during all phases of the litigation and pre-litigation process including document preparation, legal research, and superior correspondence with courts, opposing counsel, and clients.  

Responsibilities:
  • Manage all phases of litigation for a dynamic and varied body of legal work
  • Draft demand letters, pleadings, motions and documents and file them with the court including land records and probate
  • Perform administrative duties (calendar hearings and deadlines, organize case files, service of process, manage logistics etc.)
  • Assist attorneys with document review and drafting for some transactional work as well, including business documents, wills/estates, etc.  
  • Organize exhibits, documents, evidence, briefs and appendices
  • Aid attorneys with interrogatories, subpoenas, and other discovery requests
  • Manage data entry of bills, hard costs, and attorney/paralegal time
  • Other duties as assigned to meet business needs
Requirements:
  • Proven working experience as a Paralegal
  • Applicable knowledge of motions, discovery, evidence, litigation documentation, court rules and procedures, practices etc.
  • Highly organized with ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure with a high level or professionalism
  • Experience in drafting pleadings for General District Court and Circuit Court
  • Strong writing and communication skills along with attention to detail
  • Extensive computer and database expertise, experience with CLIO a plus. 
  • Paralegal associates degree or other relevant work experience in a similar role
