Mission or Goal of Unit: The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to delivering the best possible anesthetic and critical care to our patients, to advancing research and quality improvement in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine and training the next generation of anesthesiologists through our residency and fellowship programs along with medical student teaching.

Chief Purpose of this Position: The Department seeks candidate that will provide care to patients at VCU Health as assigned by the Department Chair or Chair’s delegate. Virginia Commonwealth, University, Department of anesthesiology, is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Section Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology. We are seeking a nationally recognized academic leader, with outstanding clinical acumen, excellence in education and research and a strong commitment to clinical operations and patient access optimization. Demonstration of proven leadership skills to effectively inspire, manage, and develop faculty and staff as well as possession of advance skillsets in interdepartmental collaboration and consensus building is a required. This individual will report to the chair of the department of anesthesia and the Physician in Chief of Surgery. The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the VCU department of anesthesiology and the Children’s Hospital of Richmond mission, as they pertain to the practice of the pediatric anesthesiologist, including clinical care, education, research, and administration. This includes pre-anesthetic evaluation, intraoperative anesthetic care, postoperative rounds, resuscitation and intensive care, therapeutic/diagnostic nerve blocks, and consultation in cases of chronic pain. Directs the activities of nurse anesthetists as assigned by Chair or Chair’s delegate.

Position Responsibilities: 
1) Teaching: Develop and improve educational programs which support learning and enhanced practice. Provides “bedside” clinical teaching of residents, medical students, student nurse anesthetists and others. Participates in the didactic teaching programs of the Department at this institution and attends conferences, rounds, and staff meetings as required by Chair.

2) Research: Lead innovative scholarship in Pediatric Anesthesia. Establish criteria for benchmarks of success for Pediatric Anesthesiologist for the assessment of achievement of excellence in scholarly activities.

3) Service: May serve on various departmental, School of Medicine, University or VCU Health System committees as requested by Chair or determined via individual interest. the Department stresses the importance of being a good citizen of the institution and fosters community service at all levels.

4) Clinical: Develop a vision that focuses on lifelong improvement in perioperative outcomes. Provide leadership and expertise, clinical operations management at Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Medicine and VCU Health. Provide clinical anesthesiology care to patients as directed by Department Chair or delegate. May supervise and direct Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) as appropriate.

Required Qualifications: 

  • MD or DO degree
  • ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Eligible for employment in the United States
  • Prior demonstration in Leadership in an Academic Anesthesiologist Department
  • Strong communication, clinical and teaching skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
