Physician Scientist - Infectious Diseases (Full-time, Minneapolis MN)

The Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare seeks to hire a full-time clinician researcher who is at/entering an academic rank of assistant or associate professor. The researcher will be positioned within the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CeIDeR) at the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) and maintain a clinical practice in Infectious Diseases at Hennepin Healthcare. Areas of programmatic focus within CeIDeR include clinical trials and implementation science, HIV cardiometabolic and aging complications, HIV and STI prevention, malaria, immunology of effective host responses and immune-mediated pathology. Research focus in global clinical trials, HIV, respiratory infections and/or emerging infectious diseases are areas of interest, though a research focus with potential for collaboration across Infectious Diseases, the Department of Medicine and broader Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute are also viable. The Department of Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare is awarded over $30 million in extramural research per year.

The CeIDeR includes infrastructure including clinical trial conduct, an embedded translational laboratory with flow cytometry, as well as biospecimen collection, processing and storage capabilities. CeIDeR also houses a clinical trial coordinating center for the NIH-funded global network STRIVE (Strategies for Respiratory Infections and Viral Emergencies). Investigators also have access to access to HHRI animal research facilities as well as infrastructure at the University of Minnesota including the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and core laboratories such as the genomics, microscopy, flow cytometry and supercomputing core.
The position will consist of 75% effort on research and 25% on clinical activities, reflecting inpatient and outpatient clinical time as appropriate. Educational activities related to fellow, resident and medical student training also exist. Research faculty will be eligible for a start-up package that may include additional protected time for research activities for up to three years (in addition to the applicant’s existing funding). Applicants will be encouraged to have mentorship related to their research focus, either within the local HHRI and University of Minnesota community and/or through existing mentorship established by the candidate. Physician scientists at Hennepin Healthcare have a faculty appointment in Medicine at University of Minnesota, consistent with their career stage.
Minimum Qualifications
- MD/DO degree with Board certification in Clinical Infectious Diseases
- Current, or eligible for, license to practice in the State of Minnesota
- Research experience, funding, and publication record commensurate with career stage
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced training in research (e.g., MPH, research focused fellowship)
- Demonstrated ability to compete for research grant support
