Since its founding at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people - children, teachers, and families - by offering innovative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 400,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development and participation in a variety of public events and research initiatives.

NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs, and products, all of which are informed by our inclusive, research-derived approach to STEM learning and engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play - open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement and delight - are the ingredients that invite broad participation in STEM and make engagement and learning irresistible. Through this transformative model for STEM exploration, NYSCI engages diverse communities of learners in STEM, by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people's play. NYSCI has approximately 87 full-time and over 103 part-time and casual staff members.

POSITION OVERVIEW

New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) seeks an experienced and visionary IT Director to lead technology operations and drive digital strategy. Reporting to the COO, the Director will oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of all IT systems, ensuring they support NYSCI's mission, program and services. The Director is responsible for managing a robust IT infrastructure, including network administration, cybersecurity, and data management, while also leading efforts to enhance technology capabilities across departments and functions.

The IT Director will play a critical role in shaping NYSCI's technology infrastructure, ensuring IT systems are secure, scalable, and optimized for current and future needs. This includes conducting regular IT audits, implementing strong cybersecurity measures, and developing policies to safeguard data and systems, identifying and mitigating risks, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and maintaining high standards of information security across the organization. The Director is a leader in fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the IT team, ensuring the IT team remains at the forefront of technology trends and best practices.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strategic planning skills with a deep understanding of IT infrastructure and a proven record of collaboration working closely across departments. The director will work across departments to identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation, ensuring technology solutions effectively support NSYCI's operations, public programs and services.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establishes and leads the implementation of Information Technology strategy, including all aspects of information infrastructure and network technology. Creates the IT vision for NYSCI and drives execution of strategies to achieve institutional goals.
  • Oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including networks, hardware, software, and security.
  • Leads IT projects from conception to completion, ensuring on-time delivery and within budget.
  • Collaborates and advises on the selection of products and services for NYSCI's operations according to requirements set by departmental business owners.
  • Develops and enforces robust IT security policies and procedures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Ensures the organization's IT systems are secure and compliant with relevant regulations and industry standards
  • Sets departmental goals, oversight, and general direction for the IT Department; establishes KPIs and service standards for the department.
  • In consultation with the SVP, Operations, acts as lead contact for negotiation of IT service agreements and other contracts with vendors.
  • Ensures timely delivery of products and services and monitors suppliers to ensure they adhere to contractual obligations.
  • Develops, monitors and operates the IT department budget.
  • Partner with Advancement and Program teams to fundraise for IT assets and technology solutions.
  • Supports other members of the operations and business development teams in the implementation of select projects, conducting diligence, modeling, negotiation and documentation as needed.
  • Assesses existing policies and practices and updating procedures and plans regularly. Acts as coordinator for continuity efforts after any disruption events.
  • Works in partnership with business unit owners as an advisor on technologies that may improve outcomes.
  • Sets timetables for project implementation and deployment of selected product and service solutions.
  • Identifies emerging technology trends to enhance business operations and efficiency.
  • Other related duties, and responsibilities, as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous learning and professional development within the IT team.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of (3) full-time direct reports, Hourly/Casual Staff, and IT interns.
  • Partner with Human Resources to recruit and hire IT staff (as needed)
  • Steward and supervise ongoing IT internships in collaboration with program partners
  • Other related duties, and responsibilities, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Business Administration, a related field, and/or its work experience equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience of IT management preferably in a cultural institution, university, or public-facing organization with dynamic multi-stakeholder business and operating needs
  • Demonstrated success in the design, implementation and management of an enterprise-wide information system
  • Adept in fundamental as well as emerging information technologies and new media applications
  • Proficiency in Audio/Visual (AV) equipment, with the ability to facilitate and produce hybrid events
  • Strong knowledge of IT infrastructure, networks, security, asset management, and systems administration
  • Demonstrated financial and budget management, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring cost-effective use of technology investments.
  • Proficient IT Practitioner and Administrator in Apple and PC Asset Management, Cisco Meraki Network solutions
REQUIREMENTS
  • Strategic IT Leadership: Proven ability to develop and implement IT strategies that align with organizational goals, driving digital transformation and innovation across the organization.
  • Technical Expertise in Modern IT Infrastructures: Deep knowledge of cloud computing, cybersecurity, network architecture, and enterprise software systems, with hands-on experience in managing hybrid cloud environments and advanced security protocols.
  • Project and Program Management: Extensive experience leading complex IT projects, including planning, execution, and delivery
  • Financial Acumen: Strong skills in IT budgeting, cost management, and ROI analysis to effectively manage IT expenditures and investments while optimizing resource allocation
  • Team Leadership and Development: Proven track record of building, leading, and mentoring diverse IT teams, fostering a collaborative environment, promoting professional growth and continuous learning
  • Communications: Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: Ability to work flexibly, and adapt to new initiatives and projects through agility and collaborative engagement
  • Risk Management and Compliance: Expertise in identifying and mitigating IT risks, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, such as sitting or standing, for extended periods while performing duties at a desk or computer workstation
  • Requires the ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment, involving repetitive motions such as typing, reaching, and handling objects
  • Ability to move throughout the office or facility to attend meetings, provide support, and access equipment or technology as needed
  • Must be capable of occasional lifting and carrying of items, such as laptops or equipment, weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Requires visual and auditory abilities sufficient to interact with computer screens, read printed materials, and communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
