Staff Geologist / Engineer

LOCATION: Central Region (Chicago or Lombard, IL offices ideally; Farmington Hills, MI or Milwaukee considered)

SUMMARY

Partner is seeking a full-time field Geologist / Staff Scientist / Engineer to support our Environmental Solutions Group in the Central Region. The Environmental Solutions Group focuses on site characterization, risk assessments, implementation of remedial actions, regulatory interaction, litigation support, and expert witness. It is preferred that the candidate has some knowledge of environmental site investigation, mitigation, and remediation services with proven field experience. It is anticipated that to 80% field work will be performed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

In general, this position will be responsible for the following activities: Support environmental investigation, remediation, and compliance-related projects in the field and office. Perform a variety of fieldwork including installation and sampling of soil borings, soil vapor probes, and groundwater monitoring wells; oversight of remedial excavations; soil vapor extraction operations and maintenance; indoor air quality sampling; and air monitoring. Scheduling and oversight of excavation, drilling, and construction subcontractors will also be required.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
  • Use of electronic records collection methods for field efforts. Perform data analysis and calculations and assist in database development
  • Prepare and review technical reports, graphics, feasibility studies, work plans, design documents, and construction documents, including geologic and hydrogeologic interpretation from field investigations and sampling, to summarize data, results, and remedial options
  • Support management of medium-to-large, complex tasks to ensure internal and external expectations are met for scope, budget, schedule, and quality
  • Experience or ability to learn drilling techniques, and drilling and sampling oversight for environmental projects
  • Underground storage tank removal oversight and post-removal sampling
  • Experience or ability to learn collecting environmental samples and overseeing field investigations
  • Conduct soil gas surveys and indoor air sampling
  • Conduct the installation of (and operation and maintenance of) SSDS / SVE
  • Oversight of groundwater monitoring well installation; vapor extraction well and soil vapor sampling well installation
  • Quarterly groundwater monitoring oversight
  • Support project management in the conduct of fieldwork
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to spend time outside for full days of field activity, with standing, bending, lifting of 50 pounds or more
  • Ability to conduct, or learn to conduct soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and indoor air sampling
  • Ability to be observant and take copious notes of field activities
  • Ability to manage subcontractors in an active setting, including drilling, excavating, and groundwater sampling
  • Good writing skills with a desire to ultimately prepare lengthy scientific reports
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel
  • Experience with MS Project, CADD, and Corel Draw
  • Experience with ArcMap, ArcGIS, or other ESRI GIS software programs
  • Willingness to learn data management computer programs
  • Capable of conducting/supporting field operations
  • Knowledge of data compilation and organization
  • Knowledge of Illinois, Michigan, or Wisconsin environmental regulations
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2-5 years of experience in the environmental consulting industry
  • Knowledge of drilling techniques, and drilling and sampling oversight for environmental projects preferred, or an interest in learning
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited university in geology, engineering, or environmental sciences
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER training a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend English
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in person, telephone, and in writing
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screen
  • Requires frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, sitting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout the work shift
  • Required 50-100% travel
