The opportunity:

Exceptional software development is integral in allowing us to fulfill our mission of fixing the user experience in global trade. At Flexport you'll develop products that are at the forefront of reshaping the entire logistics & supply chain industries. You will work alongside self-starters interested in solving real-world problems and streamlining the inefficiencies in the complex global trade industry. You'll have the opportunity to reshape an industry by creating the new operating system for global trade.

We're seeking an Engineering Manager (EM) to join our multi-disciplinary Shipping Solutions Team. This team builds tools for customers who use Flexport's emerging Booking Management and Order Management systems to connect with their suppliers and contractors, putting you at the center of a developing product with direct impact to the company's business strategy. This role is perfect for someone who wants to think creatively about operator processes and logistics technology, and get to partner closely with business stakeholders on one of the company's hallmark products. The successful candidate will be comfortable managing a direct team of full-stack software engineers, working with multiple stakeholder groups including other engineering teams, business, and operations, and will have demonstrated success in building extensible, high performance software. Familiarity with the logistics industry or manufacturing is a plus, but not required.

You will:
  • Hire, develop, and grow a team of software engineers responsible for owning newly developing business services.
  • Develop and maintain a culture of technical excellence that enables the team to maintain their existing features while still building new capabilities. We believe in anticipating issues by obsessing over metrics and applying key learnings from post-mortems to all our services.
  • Influence and collaborate with other leaders across teams and disciplines to move forward the business's objectives leveraging Flexport's existing technology and architectures.
  • Anticipate blockers or bottlenecks and manage against these risks to successfully execute projects that directly improve our top-line business metrics.
  • Prepare written and verbal communication and updates for stakeholders and leadership including executive-team level meetings.
You should have:
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience building large scale, high-performance systems in a complex, multi-tiered, distributed environment.
  • 3+ years of people management experience for a group of engineers.
  • Proven track record managing complex, cross-functional software projects at a large start up, or another fast-paced environment.
  • Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design and data structures, algorithm design, problem solving and complexity analysis.
  • Understanding of best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations.
  • Experience recruiting, hiring and managing a team.
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • A "compliance first" attitude to keep our regulators happy and enthusiastic about Flexport since we operate in a heavily regulated industry.

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range displayed, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and / or training.

The US base salary range for this position: (exclusive of bonus, equity and benefits.)

$222,000-$247,000 USD
