Job Description

Americas Regional Health, Safety, Environment & Radiation (HSE&R) Director is a management role reporting to the VP of Operations. As Americas Regional HSE&R Director, the primary responsibility is to manage the environmental, industrial, health, and safety regulation compliance for Smiths Detection Americas. This role oversees the development, planning, and implementation of environmental, health, and safety policies and develops procedures (chemical safety, ergonomics, illness and injury prevention, and building safety) used throughout the company. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to environmental safety and handles all contact with appropriate agencies. Oversees licensed hazardous and radioactive waste disposal and monitors waste handling. Develops and supervises company training programs for employees in areas such as compliance training, lab/plant inspection, hazardous material handling, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety. Maybe the point of contact for emergency personnel and management of workers' compensation program administration. Ensures appropriate corrective action is taken where health and safety hazards exist.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of 3-5 employees with varying knowledge of HSE&R. Assure the competency and quality of regional HSE&R resources and supervise, develop, and mentor team members.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on HSE&R-related matters, serving as a subject matter expert and championing a safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Advise the management team on HSE and Radiation (HSE&R) compliance requirements. Provide leadership and subject matter expertise to ensure appropriate HSE and Radiation systems are in place.
  • Manage and track regional Key Performance Indicators and drive improvements toward goals.
  • Support problem resolution and provide leadership and guidance for the site and field HSE teams.
  • Ensure the timely & accurate reporting of HSE&R performance data and incidents.
  • Ensure that site-specific environmental targets are met and challenged for improvement.
  • Provide analysis and trending information for the Smiths Detection Global HSE Director.
  • Provide business leadership and global Smiths Detection HSE leader with analysis of trends and drivers of environmental metrics.
  • Support regional execution of tactical initiatives to eliminate hazards and risks. Drive continuous HSE performance improvement.
  • Continuously assess HSE hazards and risks and assist where specific technical expertise is required to meet regional regulations or company policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Plan and direct HSE activities and programs; establish priorities for project execution based on site resources and the cost of implementation.
  • Actively investigate significant HSE&R incidents and ensure timely and complete implementation of corrective actions.
  • In conjunction with HSE site leads, coordinate external registration and surveillance audit schedules for ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 with a selected certifying body or registrar.
  • Ensure development and delivery of focused HSE&R training and education in all sites and the field.
  • Develop an understanding of HSE&R issues and the role of site leaders in mitigation.
  • Serve in a matrix environment and maintain regular interface with divisional, regional, and site leadership, HSE contacts, and inter/intra company contacts on the status of HSE&R objectives and performance.
  • Act as a key channel for ensuring timely communication of significant site activities and events.
  • Support the field-based staff with specific HSE&R programs.
  • Review submission for Global Smiths Detection HSE monthly call.
  • Ensure the site meets on a monthly basis the requirements of the Playbook and the Group Leading Indicator Program.
  • Support and facilitate preparation and maintenance of Emergency Procedures for potential facility/security emergencies or disasters in concert with site Security leadership. Support preparation of Inter-operation Procedures and Operating Instructions.
  • Ensure there are processes to establish, maintain and control archived business documents and stored facility equipment to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations within the region.
  • Any other duties assigned

The Individual

Education/Training: Bachelor's degree - required

Master's Degree or equivalent in related field - preferred

Experience: 5+ years related HSE experience in a manufacturing setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management experience: at least 5 years' supervision/managing experience required.

Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems or equivalent preferred. Facilities management experience preferred. Previous experience with security regulations in a global environment preferred.

Knowledge/Skills: Possession of strong organizational skills. Demonstrated ability in leading change and establishing an HSE culture. Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing projects/initiatives in a matrix environment. Ability to delegate and manage multiple responsibilities effectively. Excellent verbal and written communication. Possess exceptional interpersonal skills. Ability to challenge and debate issues of importance to the organization with diplomacy. Fluent user of Microsoft Office Suite.
