Photonics Engineer, Mid
Key Role:
Join us as we use quantum information science for good in the federal government. Work closely with clients to understand their questions and needs and provide direct quantum support in their laboratory environment. Mentor and learn from teammates, run advanced experiments, study and evaluate complex data, and recommend changes and alternative solutions. Design and develop integrated photonic devices such as waveguides, including silicon, silicon nitride, and aluminum nitride, modulators, including thermo-optic and plasma dispersion-based, and detectors for chip-scale accelerometers and chip-to-chip RF time transfer. Interact with foundry partners to develop novel photonic devices and processes within standard Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication flows. Collaborate with world-leading multidisciplinary teams across the DoD, industry, and academia to integrate traditionally bulk and fiber optic systems to the chip-scale. Perform simulations using industry standard photonics and tools such as Ansys Lumerical MODE, FDTD, DEVICE, and INTERCONNECT, to optimize device and circuit performance. Design integrated photonic chips for foundry fabrication using standard layout software such as GDSFactory, GDSpy, Nazca, and KLayout. Characterize integrated photonic devices and circuits experimentally using die- and wafer-level test and measurement equipment. Lead experiments in quantum optics and photonics, analyzing experimental results and identifying opportunities for innovation.
