Tokamak Instrumentation Optical Engineer

Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Devens, MA

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we're designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We're in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we've raised over $2 billion in capital - more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we're looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who'll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that's you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Tokamak Instrumentation Optical Engineer

The SPARC Tokamak Instrumentation & Control Team seeks an instrumentation engineer capable of designing, analyzing, prototyping, and integrating optical systems that instrument superconducting magnets in extreme environments - ultra-high vacuum; operating at cryogenic temperatures; high background and transient magnetic fields; and ionizing radiation. These instruments are primarily composed of optical fibers, splitters, splices, and lasers.

What you'll do:
    • Design of laser based instrumentation for SPARC tokamak systems by production of the required design deliverables according to the SPARC design process
    • Install high power industrial laser systems and ensure that the associated regulatory and safety practices and documentation are followed.
    • Iterate in 3D CAD on components and reviewing parts, assemblies, and drawings
    • Formulate and conduct small scale testing to retire risk and incorporate findings back into design
    • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems
    • Produce rigorous documentation for engineering deliverables such as instrument lists, signal lists, loop diagrams, data sheets and cabling schedules
    • Produce testing, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance procedures
    • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
    • Collaborate with the lead engineers for tokamak structural, thermal, and magnetic systems and other key stakeholders to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented according to requirements
    • Maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems

What we're looking for:
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
    • Led the design and installation of a high powered laser systems
    • Supported the safety and regulatory compliance of working with high powered laser systems
    • 2+ years of experience working with high powered laser systems

Bonus points:
    • 2+ years of test integration experience
    • 2+ years of hands-on experience
    • 2+ years of mechanical design experience
    • Mechanical CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar)
    • Be familiar with interpreting codes and standards (e.g. BPVC/IPC/NASA)
    • GD&T
    • Familiarity with harsh environments (vacuum, high pressure, low temperature, high magnetic field, radiation)
    • FEM analysis tools (e.g. ANSYS. COMSOL)

Essential Requirements:
    • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
    • Perform extended activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc.
    • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call regularly
    • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
    • #LI-Onsite
