Mission or Goal of Unit: To provide high-quality care to inpatients at VCU Health System while educating future healthcare practitioners and advancing the quality and safety of inpatient health car.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Division of Hospital Medicine is seeking an Associate Chief of Research to lead the scholarly efforts of the Division including enhancing quality improvement efforts, supporting educational scholarship, and developing collaborations with other academic units and other units focused on quality improvement in the health system.

Position Responsibilities: 

Teaching | Train current and future healthcare practitioners on scholarly approaches.  Mentor faculty, trainees, and students on scholarly work.  Oversee the Departmental Summer Scholars Program.

Research | Oversee the research efforts of the Division of Hospital Medicine.  Collaborate with academic and health system units to strengthen and advance research at VCU and VCU Health System.  Supervise research staff in the Division of Hospital Medicine.  Identify and procure extramural support for research effort.  Disseminate research products in collaboration with division members in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Service | Lead the Division of Hospital Medicine Data Committee and other research-related committees.  Participate in other divisional and departmental service activities.

Clinical | Variable depending on whether the hired candidate is a clinician.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field for health services research such as nursing, psychology, public health, health policy, or research discipline or an MD or DO degree with documented accomplishments in research
  • Experience developing an independent program of research
  • Track record of attaining funding to support research activities
  • Ability to collaborate across traditional institutional boundaries to develop successful initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with hospital-based research
  • Participation in national or international research collaborations and networks
  • Track record of federal funding
