The Role:
TIME is seeking a Senior Editor to lead its Ideas coverage, commissioning and editing stories on the people, movements, and forces shaping politics, global affairs, society, and the culture. A successful candidate should be a strong, dynamic editor who enjoys generating ambitious ideas and making smart assignments in a fast-paced environment.
This role is based in New York and will involve being part of a global, 24/7 news operation that coordinates between editorial staff in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The Senior Editor should be able to juggle multiple, overlapping deadlines, and be comfortable editing daily analysis alongside longer-lead pieces.
TIME Ideas publishes a wide range of provocative perspectives that challenge conventional wisdom and offer insight on the critical issues of the day. This is an opportunity for an enterprising, intellectually curious editor to further advance TIME's distinctive opinion and ideas journalism.

Responsibilities:
- Execute the editorial vision and coverage priorities for TIME Ideas
- Commission and edit argument-driven essays, columns, analysis, arguments, and human interest stories from a wide range of outside voices
- Cultivate relationships with emerging thinkers as well as a diverse stable of established voices including academics, authors, freelancers, columnists, and experts
- Stay on top of the news to find distinctive angles and framings for stories that live in TIME's Ideas section
- Manage a team of 2-3 editors by fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment
- Work with the audience team to optimize Ideas stories for maximum impact across all platforms
- Collaborate with reporters, editors, photo editors, and others in the TIME newsroom to support and expand ideas coverage
- Promote and abide by our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of editing experience, preferably for a high-impact media outlet or publication
- Experience commissioning outside contributors and working with leading authors
- A track record of editing impactful stories on topics that include politics, global affairs, culture, health, lifestyle, and social issues
- Wide-ranging intellectual interests from history and political science to foreign policy, economics, and beyond
- An ability to pressure test arguments and embrace nuance without losing clarity
- Excellent news judgment and a knack for distinctive angles and sharp analysis
- A commitment to a diversity of perspective
- Unimpeachable news judgment and editorial instincts
- Enthusiastic about innovation, positive-change and collaboration.
