Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual who is interested in advancing their career, to join our Site Investigation, Remediation, and Risk Assessment (SIRRA) team. Our team provides a wide range of environmental services in a variety of sectors, including mining, oil and gas, energy, manufacturing, government, insurance, and commercial real estate. As a Canadian leader in contaminated sites investigation and remediation, as well as, human health and ecological risk assessments, our group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively.

Our staff of professionals includes specialists in human health toxicology, ecotoxicology, contaminant fate and transport, risk assessment, site remediation, and risk communication. Our team members have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects ranging from brownfield redevelopments to environmental assessments for large-scale developments, evaluating health and ecological concerns associated with contaminants in the environment. Stantec currently requires a Risk Assessor to join our growing Site Investigation, Remediation, and Risk Assessment in British Columbia (Burnaby, Victoria, Kelowna, remote).

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform human health and ecological risk assessment for contaminated sites, including management and interpretation of field data, development of problem formulations, exposure models and risk assessment report preparation in accordance with current provincial and federal requirements
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of toxicology databases, contaminant transport modeling tools, and other in-house risk assessment tools and processes
  • Assist with the design of field sampling programs of inorganic media and biological tissues
  • Support site investigations such as Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, Stage 1 and 2 Preliminary Site Investigations, and Detailed Site Investigations
  • Execution of complex field programs for risk assessments and site investigations, including sampling for biological indicators, soil, soil vapour, sediment, groundwater and surface water sampling
  • Support project managers with preparing proposals and business development
  • Support clients in various sectors, including oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, government, insurance, and commercial real estate.
  • Active participation in project and functional team meetings
  • Mentorship of junior personnel
  • Collaborate across disciplines including Indoor Environments, Environmental Assessment disciplines, Geotechnical, Atmospheric Sciences, and Water Resources across Stantec Canada offices.
  • Actively participate in promoting a strong health and safety culture in the team
  • Work with project managers to develop scopes, budgets, and schedules
  • Organize field programs, including subcontractor agreements, scheduling, equipment resourcing, etc.


Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the provincial (BC, others) and federal environmental regulations, guidelines and standards related to Contaminated Sites
  • Experience designing and conducting detailed risk assessments for human health and ecological values
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (sample of writing may be requested)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Strong business acumen
  • Experience in environmental assessments for transportation (including rail, marine facilities, and airports), commercial, government, oil and gas sectors or mining
  • Previous consulting experience in human or ecological risk assessment; previous experience with field studies
  • Previous experience in preparing applications for Risk-based Certificates of Compliance is an asset


Education and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree in one of the Environmental Sciences (Toxicology, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Earth Sciences, etc.) or equivalent.

Five or more years of risk assessment experience, experience in British Columbia preferred.

Possession of, or eligibility for, a professional designation (e.g., R.P. Bio, P.Eng., P.Geo., P.Ag., P. Chem etc.) is required.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Potential for a hybrid approach for the office working environment Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement.
