General Summary
The VP, Head of Research and Development is responsible for the design, implementation, and enhancement of software and systems infrastructure that empower our creative teams and artisans while advancing our production capabilities. This role involves collaboration across production and technology teams to develop a portfolio of projects aimed at next-generation production technologies. The VP, Head of Research and Development will lead innovative technology initiatives that support traditional VFX and stop motion animation, as well as drive research into emerging technologies such as machine learning, diffusion models, and virtual production, integrating these advancements into our animation and live-action filmmaking pipelines.

Job Functions
  • Lead the design and deployment of advanced software systems and infrastructure that enhance creative workflows and production efficiency.
  • Drive innovation by identifying and implementing next-generation production technologies that align with our artistic and technical goals.
  • Guide innovation in LAIKA's traditional stop motion and VFX teams to meet the new creative challenges of films in development.
  • Collaborate closely with production and technology teams to ensure seamless integration of new tools and processes into existing pipelines.
  • Create R&D project plans that include staffing, budgets, schedules, and strategy for integration and testing.
  • Manage project-based teams of researchers and developers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic roadmap for R&D, ensuring alignment with LAIKA'S long-term vision.
  • Present R&D strategies and progress to executives, securing buy-in and resources for key initiatives.
  • Establish partnerships with external research institutions and technology providers to leverage new advancements in the field.
  • Ensure that all R&D projects adhere to industry best practices and maintain the highest standards of quality and security.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in R&D within the media technology sector, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in leading research and development projects.
  • Experience working in public cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience with SDLC concepts and methodologies, including CI/CD, version control discipline.
  • Proficiency in VFX pipelines, CG animation, machine learning and its applications in film production.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Location
On-site in Hillsboro, OR and also eligible for remote work.

Salary
Salary is commensurate with skills and experience.
