Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Manager and Senior Counsel - Legal Contracts in Geosyntec's Legal Department. This position can be based from any of our U.S. locations such as Detroit, MI; Overland Park, KS; Chicago, IL; Kennesaw, GA; or Atlanta, GA. Hybrid and remote work schedules are available for this position.

The ideal candidate will work with General Counsel and other members of the corporate legal department to support dynamic professional engineering and consulting practice. Primary responsibility will be to oversee and manage the company's contracting strategy and contracts review team, which will include reviewing and negotiating contractual relationships pursuant to the risk and contract management policies of the company; developing and managing internal standard form contracts for universal practice use as well as specialized circumstances. Provide contract and risk allocation support to project teams when pursuing projects with construction risk. Manage contract review process, workflow and contract lifecycle management system. Work with General Counsel, the other members of the legal department to offer legal support to the business and manage risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Collaboration and mentoring are cornerstones of Geosyntec's culture. We operate under a sell-manage-do culture, and so we expect that you'd work on challenging technical projects while leveraging your existing knowledge and experience to help Geosyntec expand its current practices and capabilities through business development and client management. You may also be asked to take on project management responsibilities, along with staff management and development, and mentoring tasks. Some of the key responsibilities may include:
  • Work with General Counsel, and the legal department to refine, improve, implement and manage the Company's contract management program and long-term strategy of contracting process. Support and enforce the Company's risk management philosophy and principles.
  • Oversee, manage and mentor Geosyntec's team of professional contract reviewers;
  • Along with other members of the contracts review team, review and negotiate contracts and subcontracts with clients, subcontractors, and vendors; work collaboratively with General Counsel, Company leadership, and Project or Client Managers to achieve positive and timely outcomes of negotiations.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, contracting requirements and case law.
  • Review and negotiate other project related agreements, including, without limitation, joint venture agreements, teaming or site access agreements or lease agreements.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding subcontractor compliance with subcontract requirements including, but not limited to, insurance coverage and other terms and conditions.
  • Increase awareness regarding contract-related issues and risks; develop training programs as needed.
  • Assist with and maintain the company's contract lifecycle management system and internal communication portal (SharePoint site) for the legal department to offer a resource for the practice.
  • Identify and onboard technology solutions to improve the department's performance and efficiency.
  • Provide high quality, positive and responsive contract-related services to both internal and external clients.
  • Provide guidance and support to Project or Client Managers on contract or risk management related issues.
  • Respond to requests for assistance and guidance from Project and Client Managers.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as needed.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • Juris Doctor (required)
  • License to practice law (required)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house department with contract law experience, including the review, administration and negotiation of contracts; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Some experience building a team, recruiting, supervising and mentoring others. (preferred)
  • Responsibility for the strategic adoption and implementation of policies and procedures. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with the US Federal procurement requirements and consultant insurance program experience. (preferred)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and PowerPoint and working knowledge of Excel. (required)
  • Must have the ability to efficiently and effectively manage individual workload including the ability to independently manage conflicting priorities, resolve conflicts cooperatively, and complete tasks in accordance with critical time-driven deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from colleagues, groups of professionals, senior management, project teams, clients and subcontractors. (required)
  • Ability to write correspondence, reports, procedure manuals and presentations conforming to prescribed style and format. (required)
