Gas Systems / Pipeline Project Engineer

SPEC Services provides engineering services for gas utilities, gas and liquid fuel pipelines, storage and process facilities, renewable energy systems, carbon sequestration, and water distribution in California and western/southwestern USA. We have excellent opportunities for experienced gas systems engineers and pipeline engineers to build both their technical and project engineering expertise. Our Project Engineers typically lead project technical development, including developing the overall project solution and scope, and coordinate the work of other disciplines and specialists. Project Engineers take on increasing levels of project engineering and project management challenges and responsibilities based on their performance and abilities.

  • Lead engineering and design teams in the preparation of feasibility studies and preliminary design reports, development of project scope, budgets and schedules, and preparation of proposals.
  • Develop, scope, and orchestrate the execution of pipeline engineering and design projects, resulting in the successful completion of projects and the development of working relationships and continuing business with clients.
  • Assist in staffing decisions regarding members of the project team, assigning the work, and assuring its successful and timely completion.
  • Manage sub-consultants to assure adequate coordination between offices, and to manage their work product.
  • Act as a capable leader and a positive representative in dealing with the client and in directing and expediting the work.
  • Ensure expected results, specifically: excellence in quality of work performed, client communication and satisfaction, efficient staff utilization, client satisfaction for ongoing client referrals, as well as excellence of office reputation, contract management, billing collection and project profitability.


Job Requirements
  • 5+ years of gas systems, pipeline, or relevant engineering experience is required. Engineering services firm experience is desirable, and gas utility project experience in California is strongly preferred.
  • B.S. Degree in engineering or related field is required.
  • Candidate must be familiar with relevant codes and standards, such as 49 CFR Parts 192 and/or 195, ASME B31.3/B31.4, B31.8, and/or B31.12.
  • Professional Engineering license is preferred.
  • Project Management certification is a plus.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering software/tools.
  • Construction and field experience is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.


Location and Work Schedule

  • We are currently seeking engineers who reside within the Greater Bay area and are able to commute to the Walnut Creek/San Ramon area in order to provide on-call support and communication with clients in the region. SPEC currently works on a 9/80 work schedule and has a hybrid workforce designed to optimize value for company, clients, and personnel. Work will be primarily in Northern California, with approximately 10% travel to client project sites and to the corporate office in Southern California.


Salary Range

  • SPEC has opportunities for engineers and project managers at multiple levels of responsibility. Typical annual compensation range for this position as described is $100,000-$150,000. Other factors may impact the offer including years of experience, industry knowledge and other areas of position value.
