NEUROSURGEON NEEDED - CONNECTICUT

Hartford HealthCare’s Ayer Neuroscience Institute is seeking a neurosurgeon to join William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT. Located on the Connecticut shore, Backus Hospital is strategically located approximately 35 miles from Hartford serving the health care needs of New London County and several surrounding counties. Backus Hospital is a 233-bed medical center established in 1893. As of FY22, there were 1,738 employees and 620 physicians on staff. There were 2,388 inpatient surgeries and 6,563 ambulatory surgeries. It remains the only trauma center in Windham and New London Counties. Neurosurgery services are currently provided by three, full-time Hartford HealthCare neurosurgeons. One well-established neurosurgeon is nearing retirement and succession planning is underway to maintain a robust, fully-autonomous neurosurgery program with 24/7 neurosurgery call coverage at Backus Hospital. The new neurosurgeon will walk into immediate volume with a focus on spine. Interests in complex spine, general intracranial and basic neurotrauma will be supported.

Practice and Hospital Highlights:

·     Backus Hospital is a 233-bed community hospital with:

o    Separate Medical and Surgical ICUs

o    12 operating rooms

o    24/7 trauma and neurohospitalist coverage

o    A level 3 trauma center - Q3 call schedule supported by mid-levels

o    A partnership model between ortho-spine and neuro-spine surgeons

o    Shared PA service between Neurosurgery and Orthopedics

·     Block OR time at Backus Hospital 

·     First year expected volume of 100+ cases and 200-250 cases once established

·     Surgical Technology: Globus Robot for spine surgery, Stealth Navigation with O-arm, Zeiss Kinevo Microscope and ancillary spine equipment

·     Position includes two ambulatory clinic locations:

o    Hartford HealthCare Family Health Center in beautiful Mystic, CT.

§  This location is the Ayer Neuroscience Institute’s marquee ambulatory site in the East Region with neurosurgery, neuromuscular, pain management, headache, epilepsy, movement disorders, and an infusion center; ancillary services include Diagnostic Imaging, rehabilitation network, general surgery, cardiology, vascular, vascular testing, integrative medicine, and primary care

o    Ayer Neuroscience Institute multi-specialty outpatient clinic in Norwich, CT

§  This location includes neurosurgery, neuroimmunology, infusion center, headache, epilepsy, stroke, general neurology, and neuromuscular; ancillary services includes diagnostic imaging

§  Opportunity to work alongside neurosurgeons and full-time physician assistant

§  Clinic is located 1-mile from Backus Hospital

§  Located in Eastern Connecticut along the Long Island Sound, Norwich, which is known as 'The Rose of New England', is a city in New London County with a metro population of roughly 275,000 residents. It lies at the confluence of the Yantic and Shetucket rivers, which form the Thames. Rapid industrial growth transformed Norwich into a modern urban center by the early 20th century. Today, Norwich is a thriving city with a stable population, full range of municipal services, a modern industrial park and a minor league ball team.

·     Competitive compensation plan including a base salary, RVU bonus and call pay plus allotment of capital specifically for equipment.

About Mystic, CT

Settled in 1654, Mystic was once a shipbuilding seaport village and a safe harbor for tall ships to weather a storm.  Today, the shoreline community with iconic Bascule Bridge is reminiscent of its rich maritime past, but clad with quintessential New England charm. Old sea captain’s homes dot the scenic roads along the Mystic River just outside of Downtown’s booming food and drink scene.
