The Sacramento Bee is seeking a dynamic, collaborative editor to direct our most ambitious journalism and lead a team of hard-charging reporters in Sacramento. We're looking for a tenacious editor who is passionate about local news and has experience developing high-impact investigations and enterprise stories that resonate with readers.
You will guide a team of reporters and work with journalists across the newsroom to identify and dig into the stories that matter in California. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to accountability journalism, driving both in-depth investigations and quick-turn stories that hold leaders and institutions to account.
This is a key editing and leadership role in The Sacramento Bee newsroom. And we're looking for someone focused on publishing stories that have a tangible impact on the community and shed light on issues that matter most to our readers.
This is a role for a strong editor, collaborator and communicator who can elevate our journalism and inspire reporters to deliver consequential, compelling stories. We need a leader who can coach senior reporters, nurture talent and develop the next generation of investigative journalists. Your mission will be to break news and to produce a mix of quick-turn accountability stories, as well as medium- and long-term enterprise reporting.
This editor will shape every aspect of our investigative journalism - from story ideas to visuals and interactive graphics to strategies for getting our journalism in front of readers - to maximize the reach and impact of our work.

The anticipated salary range for this position is between $110,000 and $150,000 annually. Individual pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, department equity, skills and relevant experience.

Requirements:
- A track record of producing high-impact investigative, enterprise and accountability journalism
- Substantial editing experience and experience leading teams
- An unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
- Strong editing and writing skills, excellent news judgment, and a demonstrated ability to see the story that's going to matter to readers
- An understanding of digital strategy, online metrics and reader engagement, and a commitment to using these tools to elevate projects and expand the reach of our journalism
- An interest in telling stories using any available platforms and an enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to take and give constructive criticism
- Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving
- The ability to lead, motivate and supervise a team. Requires superior people and mentoring skills and knowledge of good management practices
- The ability to solve problems, innovate and adapt
- The ability to help reporters navigate open records laws and synthesize documents and data to uncover news stories
- Strong organizational and time management skills
