FLSA Classification: Full-Time, Non-exempt, Hourly $17.51- $ 20.27
Essential Functions :
- Responsible for the procurement of blood specimens via venipuncture or skin puncture technique; preparation of specimens for testing; and, processing of specimens.
- Procure blood by venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick, on patients of all ages.
- Procure arterial blood samples from outpatients and neonates for blood gas analysis.
- Assess patient condition to ensure a quality specimen is drawn that will yield accurate test results. Determine specimen collection times based on information given by
caregivers.- Accurately record specimen details and data in the laboratory information specimen for the physician to utilize in their interpretation of test results.
- Evaluate physician orders and place orders in the laboratory information system when necessary.
- Consult with lab team, clinic staff, and providers on unusual orders or requests.
- Process specimens for testing on a timely basis and send out to reference labs, ensuring proper handling of specimens to maintain quality when it arrives at the testing site.
- Maintain a high level of patient care, being away of patient needs and meeting their expectations.
- Transport specimens from patient care areas, including ER, OR and nursing units.
- Give patients instructions to ensure accurate collection or preparation of the specimen by the patient.
- Act as a resource to patient care areas with respect to test ordering or specimen collection questions.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring that it performs properly.
- Comply with established PPE requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious or harmful chemical or biological agents.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program required.
