Summary:

The Lead Phlebotomist works to coordinate the work of designated personnel in addition to being responsible for the distribution of specimens to proper departments and proper preparation of specimens for laboratory analysis.

Responsibilities:
  • (20%)* Assists in coordinating shift staffing, and makes adjustments based on need. Scope includes initiating necessary pulls, calling in additional coverage when needed, and any other potential adjustments that may be indicated.
  • (20%)* Acts as technical expert in area and is the initial shift resource for all questions or problems. Individual must be able to identify problems and effectively troubleshoot autonomously when needed.
  • (20%)* Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups by following exact protocols and procedures, including patient preparation prior to testing and administration of various glucose dosages.
  • (10%)* Works with phlebotomy supervisors to develop and implement best practice departmental workflows.
  • (10%)* Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures. Responds to the needs of customers and helps to resolve exceptions. Educates patients and other laboratory clients in proper test protocol.
  • (10%)* Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens
  • (10%)* Handles specimens including selection of the appropriate specimen type to ensure high quality, reliable test results. Provides the timely distribution of specimens to ensure the shortest possible turnaround time in order to reduce expenses within medical departments and improve patient care. Communicates with and prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories. Maintains specimen integrity.
Certifications and Licensures:
  • Valid Drivers License required
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical (on-the-job) experience.
Required Education:
  • High school diploma required
  • Communication, customer service, and organizational skills required.
  • Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines; laboratory test and medical terminology; and current laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols preferred.
Other Information:
  • Individual must be proficient and maintain competency in all covered areas, including the Emergency Department, Processing, Inpatient and Outpatient Phlebotomy.Follow strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens.
  • Demonstrate competency in infection prevention and control practices and policies.
  • Follow hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Computer skills:
    • Know multiple functions in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), and reference lab computers.
  • Use the LIS computer to schedule workload and inpatient rounds, interpret test orders and place them into the computer, retrieve billing information and assist with patient registration, and communicate test results according to strict confidentiality standards.
  • Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures.
