Rear loading and automated refuse equipment are used in the collection of garbage from private homes and business establishments on an assigned route. Requires frequent heavy lifting and occasional exposure to bad weather conditions. Work is reviewed through observation and reports by the route supervisor.Upon completion of the probation period and at the discretion of the department head, the person will be eligible for promotion to the Sanitation Equipment Operator I position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)Operates packing device on truck to compress garbage; rides rear platform of truck to pick-up locations. Assists with clean up and minor maintenance on the truck at end of workday.Assists driver in backing and turning.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with property owners and other employees. Performs related work as required.Position may require work be performed on weekends and holidays as necessary. Education and Experience EducationHigh School graduation or possession of a GED certificate.Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Ability to perform heavy manual work, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to understand written and oral instructions. Must be able to read and write the English language. Ability to make judgments regarding roadworthiness and compliance per DOT regulations. Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with employees and supervisors, both by radio and in person. Other Requirements Physical RequirementsMust be able to enter/exit a refuse vehicle multiple times per day to separate carts that are too close together or move carts from obstructions so they can be serviced. Heavy lifting and/or pulling will be involved. Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs.Work involves sitting for prolonged periods, walking, kneeling, stooping, grasping, throwing, climbing, and lifting.Certifications Or Licenses Required Must have a minimum of and valid Class D license and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters. Must be able to pass DOT Commercial Driver's physical. DOT drug screening, and background check. A class B drivers license must be obtained by the employee within the probation period.
