CITY OF MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA
CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled work functions to operate motorized light to medium weight equipment to maintain and repair City grounds, sewers, stormwater conveyance systems, streets, and to provide solid waste collection services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates equipment in one of the following areas: golf course, solid waste, water/sewer, parks, stormwater, and streets.
Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, and parks; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.
Conducts pre and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage, and other associated documentation.
Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
Performs or assists in performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping duties; repairs sidewalks and curbs; mows grass; cleans storm drains and ditches; patches potholes, shovels stone on roadsides; seals cracks in streets, tars and chips streets; repairs and replaces street signs, etc.
Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions, or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of City vehicles.
Equipment Operators assigned to Parks Division perform the following additional duties:
Prunes trees and bushes; mows rights-of way, medians, and parks.
Pulls weeds and sprays chemicals.
Picks up trash.
Installs and maintains irrigation systems.
Installs and maintains playground equipment.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary. Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; six (6) months of experience in equipment operation. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
