POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general direction of the Public Works Operations Manager, and assigned under direct supervision of the Streets Manager and Streets Foreman, performs street construction, maintenance, and repairs.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

  • None.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operates and maintains various street maintenance equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, street sweepers, asphalt rollers, snowplows, and dump trucks.
  • Conducts routine inspections and preventive maintenance on a variety of hand tools, light and heavy duty equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs tasks such as street resurfacing, asphalt patching, snow removal, and ice control.
  • Conducts concrete work involving patching, repairs, replacement, and new installations.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces street signs as needed.
  • Paves, stripes, and marks roads for traffic guidance and safety.
  • Assists in the setup and cleanup of work zones, including traffic control measures and signage.
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments on equipment as needed, or reports maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and maintenance activities.
  • Handles minor building and facilities maintenance repairs, and miscellaneous repairs and maintenance.
  • Follows established safety procedures and regulations while operating equipment and working in various weather conditions.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure job completion according to schedule.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as local regulations governing street maintenance operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience
    • Streets Equipment Operator I – Any work experience in heavy equipment or training in the areas of street construction, maintenance, and repairs preferred.
    • Streets Equipment Operator II – Three years’ experience and training in streets construction or related maintenance and repairs. Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications
    • Streets Equipment Operator I – Valid Utah Driver License. Upon successful completion of probationary period, must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License.
    • Streets Equipment Operator II – Valid Utah Class B Commercial Driver License. Following certifications required: LTAP Loader and Backhoe certification, Flagger, and Traffic Control Technician.

  • Knowledge of –
    • Policies, procedures, equipment, and materials required for effective street related operations, maintenance, and repairs
    • General safety practices and procedures required
    • State of Utah Commercial Driver License rules and regulations
  • Skill with –
    • Strong math, reading, and analytical skills
    • Interpersonal relations in order to deal effectively with the public and other city employees
  • Ability to –
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Organize and plan work assignments after instructions are given and complete a wide variety of maintenance activities


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position requires working outdoors. Tasks require a variety of physical activities. Regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. May be confined to small spaces to perform work. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions. Frequent exposure to high levels of noise. Operate equipment and drive vehicles. Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Schedule is typically 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, at times, position may be assigned to work early morning or late evening shifts, and weekends depending upon scheduling needs of the city or city facilities. May be required to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as needed.
  • Salary range:
    • Streets Equipment Operator I – $19.64 – $31.37 (Starting wage is DOE but not to exceed $25.25 per hour)
    • Streets Equipment Operator II – $21.61 – $34.53 (Starting wage is DOE but not to exceed $27.50 per hour)
