Provide security for patients, employees and visitors. Protect hospital building, assets and premises as assigned. Oversees all the hospital's security systems and K9 program. Helps to lead the daily operations of the hospital's security officers and safety techs.

Responsibilities:

Physical Environment of Care

Patrol hospital buildings and premises to prevent fire, theft, vandalism and intruders.

Monitor conduct of visitors on hospital premises.

Confront unauthorized persons for questioning as needed.

Perform investigations for incidents criminal and non-criminal which occur on property.

Report safety and/or fire hazards or security violations. (All physical environment of care duties will include K9 presence.)

Program Coordination (K9)

Develop and facilitate initial and ongoing training program for current K9s in program, as well as onboarding K9s for all affiliates who elect to participate in the K9 program. Ongoing training is weekly.

Maintain equipment and supplies for K9 Unit.

Maintain all health and routine care of K9s.

Review training requirements and handler entries for K9 Unit.

Maintain K9 vehicles. Facilitates K9 narcotics detection searches, handler protection, building searches, article searches, explosive detection searches and patrol work demonstrations upon request.

Departmental Support

Trend analysis and mitigation of identified security risks. This will also include participation in risk assessments as appropriate

  • Maintains daily security logs and reports these activities to management quarterly.

Technical Support

Monitoring, managing, testing and training of UnityPoint Health-Des Moines security systems; which include, but are not limited to camera systems, access control systems, duress buttons, infant abduction systems, and patient wandering systems.

Assist in safety and security educational programs for the hospital.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

Identify items that are minimally required to perform the essential functions of this position.

Education:

High School diploma/GED or highest level of post-secondary education.

Experience:

Two years of law enforcement experience with a bachelors degree in criminal justice law enforcement.

OR

Three to five years of law enforcement experience with an associates degree in criminal justice law enforcement.

OR

Six-to ten years of law enforcement experience if there is no college degree.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Valid drivers license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

CHSO (Certified Healthcare Security Officer) within six months of employment.

CAHSO (Certified Advance Healthcare Security Officer) within one year of employment.

CHSS (Certified Healthcare Security Supervisor) within one and a half year of employment.

Master K9 trainer certified through DLE (Dogs for Law Enforcement) or a national recognized organization.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must have all National Incident Management System compliant classes taken within one year.

Must read, write, and speak English fluently.

Must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional, educational and lifestyle backgrounds.

Must be able to problem solve.

Must model professionalism.

Ability to be flexible with work assignments.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
