We are currently seeking an Optical Scientist to join the company's R&D facility located in Somerset NJ.

The successful candidate will be part of a team that designs, fabricates, and tests new types of optical fibers for high power fiber lasers, as well as building and testing new fiber laser architectures. This will require the ability to solve technical problems, both independently and as part of a team, in developing new products and new manufacturing processes. Significant aspects of the position include conducting experiments; analyzing data; design and control of equipment; and troubleshooting both R&D and manufacturing equipment. It is expected there will be opportunities to contribute to other programs of interest to the company including optical fiber-based sensors, and optical communication.

In this role, the candidate will support programs on new and improved optical fiber for fiber lasers for specialty markets. This role has the potential to lead an independent research program.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Design, execution and analysis of experiments to improve the performance of optical fibers for fiber lasers and amplifiers
    • Work with the optical fiber fabrication team and provide input on improved fiber designs and compositions
    • Interface with teams developing fiber laser components such as pump-signal fibers, fiber Bragg gratings, and fiber coatings to ensure complete design solutions for fiber laser systems
    • Characterize glass, fibers, and coatings and analyze experimental data
    • Assist in establishing and executing an R&D program to support the company manufacturing sites, including a long-term technology roadmap
    • Provide technical support to marketing and sales team and assist in understanding new business opportunities
    • Perform other related duties as required by management
Key qualifications include:
    • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field
    • Expertise in optical sciences, waveguide photonics, and related disciplines
    • Experience in building, characterizing, simulating and performing data analysis on lasers, preferably fiber lasers, is highly desired
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, preferably as demonstrated by past publications or presentations
    • Demonstrated laboratory experience working with optical components and optical fibers
    • Coursework and/or research experience in photonics and optics, preferably optical fibers
    • Demonstrated problem solving ability in a laboratory environment
    • Demonstrated skills in data analysis and lab automation through computer programming with Matlab, Labview, Python, or similar
    • Ability to understand and perform optical simulations
    • Demonstrate effective communications (verbal, written) skills
    • Proficient with MS Office Word and Excel
    • Maintain discretion when working with confidential and proprietary information
    • Strict adherence to Company safety policies and procedures
