Summary
SUMMARY: Under supervision of a licensed or certified laboratory professional, performs the more complex preparations for laboratory testing and independently conducts certain laboratory tests requiring the application of specialized knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of procedures; and performs related duties as required.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE:The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

Assists licensed or certified laboratory professional in the performance of tests.

Independently operates mechanical and electronic test instruments excluding standardization or calibration of instruments, reading and recording tests not done mechanically and quantitative measurements of samples and reagents; operates certain laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, autoclaves, distilling apparatus, balances, and other related equipment. Performs operator’s minor maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Prepares clinical specimens for examination using prescribed methods such as labeling, concentration, centrifugation, decantation, filtration; prepares and stains smears for bacteriological and parasitological examination following prescribed techniques; prepares a variety of bacteriological media following established directions, including the weighing, boiling, autoclaving, and dispensing of media; prepares specimens for shipping; prepares reagents using prescribed formulas including calculation, weighing, compounding and labeling; prepares cytology specimens for analysis by the cytotechnologist, which involves staining specimens in a series of dyes and alcohols.

May supervise, train, coordinate and direct Laboratory Assistant I and II; may schedule the work of the Laboratory Assistants to provide coverage in the event of sickness, vacation, etc.; performs, on a relief basis, those tasks performed by Laboratory Assistant I or II in the event of absence.

With the proper training, performs venous and skin punctures to obtain blood samples for test purposes.

Washes, rinses, dries, distributes and stores glassware such as test tubes, beakers, flasks, etc; maintains cleanliness in the laboratory work area and in stocks of laboratory supplies.

Performs clerical duties such as charging laboratory tests; logging slips, logging evidence, transcribing results which have previously been recorded, keeping records; keeps records of outgoing and incoming laundry; maintains a supply of stock items.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either IExperience:Two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant II. Or II Three years of experience in a clinical laboratory, crime laboratory or related unit involving laboratory equipment and the assisting of laboratory professionals in the performance of tests.
