Summary - basic function of the role

The buyer/planner will handle the day to day purchasing of parts, tools, equipment, and services for the business. Major responsibilities of this position include processing purchase orders, resolving purchase order issues, communicating with suppliers, tracking/expediting orders, and managing inventory.

Shift: Monday - Friday; 7:30 - 4:00 pm, some flexibility is possible

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain purchase orders and/or blanket orders to obtain materials that meet production and/or customer order requirements.
  • Resolve any issues or discrepancies related to purchasing activities including order variances, delivery delays, invoicing discrepancies, and quality issues.
  • Manage supplier relationships including resolving quality and supply issues, improving supplier performance, and building successful supply chain partnerships.
  • Working cross-functionally to expedite PO's based on shortage reports and/or expedite requests to meet delivery requirements for customer orders or projects. Attend operations team meetings as appropriate.
  • Monitor and update system inventory planning parameters including, but not limited to, safety stocks/reorder points, lead-times, order quantities/multiples, and forecasts to maintain customer OTD while minimizing working capital
  • Follow-up with suppliers on PO acknowledgements and past due PO's to meet KPI targets and goals
  • Identify continuous Improvement opportunities to drive improvements to KPI's such as cost, quality, delivery, and working capital.
  • Working with Category Managers, develop, implement, and maintain procurement strategies to balance quality, cost, and supply continuity. This may include leading or assisting in resourcing projects by analyzing costs, executing RFQ's, and facilitating supplier transitions/implementations.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must have experience working with Microsoft programs and a good working knowledge of ERP systems. Oracle experience is preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of Material Requirements Planning, Kanban, Vendor Managed Inventory, and Purchasing.
  • Must be a self-starter and self-motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from internal customers or members of the business community and be a strong problem solver.
  • Ability to influence others through reasoning and communication (written and oral).
  • Ability to execute multiple tasks to deadlines.
Education and Experience
  • Four-year Bachelor Degree in Business, Engineering, or Supply Chain Management
  • 3+ years of purchasing or supply chain management experience in a manufacturing environment
  • 3+ years of experience with ERP systems
  • Demonstrated supply chain knowledge (CPIM, ASCP,CPM)


Physical Demands

Employee may have to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight. Employee will have to be able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites. Position may require travel up to 5% of time depending on assigned projects. Employee will need to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations. Employee is able to work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time.

Work Environment

Primary work environment is temperature-controlled office setting but may also be visiting different manufacturing facilities where following appropriate safety protocols at the location would be required. Employee will be exposed to low levels of noise in the office and elevated levels of noise on the plant floor.
