PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To administer and coordinate diagnostic, remedial and consultive functions relative to communicative disorders.

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:

Director of Special Education and Health Services Department

RESPONSIBILITIES: To administer and coordinate diagnostic, remedial and consultative functions relative to communicative disorders. To provide screening services to the preschool & kindergarten/first grade pupils of all schools for speech problems and to set up and teach remedial programs when appropriate for communication disorders. Referrals from any teacher of any grade for a possible speech disorder will be accepted and reviewed as soon as possible with the intent of remediation if needed. To participate in special education eligibility meetings when appropriate.To administer language tests beyond the screening test when need for a more complete assessment is required, and to coordinate speech activities. To develop a speech and language therapy program consistent with the district's needs; to provide quality and quantity therapy services within the bounds of available resources and facilities. To refer to community agencies when severity warrants. The following disorders will be considered: Language, Articulation, Stuttering, Cleft Palate, Voice Disorders and any other disorder affecting communication abilities. To maintain attendance records in accordance with California State Law as pertains to speech therapy. To assist and instruct teachers in alleviating the student's communication difficulties. To speak and consult with community agencies, parents, medical personnel and teachers and to act as a liaison among these groups for children with communication disorders. To attend staff, faculty, state and national meetings. To meet the requirements and the needs of the pupils with communicative disorders as identified in categorical aide projects. To review research literature and to maintain knowledge of state legislation as it pertains to speech and hearing services in the public schools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The appropriate credential as issued by the State of California.
