JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)
Reports To: Program Specialist
Salary: Range 28 (without Certification)
Range 84 (with AA and Certification)
Range 90 (with BA and Certification)
Classification: Classified
FLSA: Non-Exempt (hourly) Work Year: School Term - 195 Work Days

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Program Specialist, provide speech and/or language therapy as prescribed by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist to the students who have been identified as having a speech, language and/or hearing handicap. Also receives direction and instruction from assigned certificated staff member and site administration.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: . • Review student goals and objectives with supervising SLP and discuss prescribed treatment plan. . • Conduct lessons with speech and language groups daily, following the prescribed plan of the supervising SLP. . • Maintain student speech files; creating new speech files, filing current documentation, updating student information when applicable. . • Create materials for prescribed lessons. . • Collect data and document student progress toward meeting established objectives as stated in the treatment plan and report this information to the supervising SLP. . • Coordinate caseload schedule with teaching staff and intervention services. . • Maintain speech and language bulletin boards, organize speech room and keep track of needed supplies and forms. . • Set up materials needed for lessons. . • Meet with supervising SLP periodically to review student progress and assist in planning future lessons. . • Maintain speech attendance register. . • Enter test scores (obtained by SLP) in assessment report. . • Score test protocols (no interpretation). . • Assist speech-language pathologist in assessments and IEP meetings as translator when appropriate. . • Support the supervising speech-language pathologist in research projects, in-service training, and public relations programs when requested. . • Perform checks and maintain equipment as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge and Application of: Basic understanding of speech and language development, child development, and remediation of speech-language disorders. Special needs, problems and requirements of speech handicapped students; Child guidance principles and practices; Basic subjects taught in schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling language and reading; Safe practices in classroom and playground activities; Correct English usage, grammar and spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; Oral and written communications skills; Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Record-keeping techniques. Ability to: . • Consistently implement speech-language remediation plans. . • Interact with students in a professional and positive manner. . • Consistently collect performance data and maintain necessary records. . • Assist certificated staff with instructional and related activities of the assigned learning environment; . • Assist students in developing speech-language and social skills; . • Print and write legibly; make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately; . • Understand and follow oral and written directions; . • Learn the procedures, functions and limitation of assigned duties; communicate effectively with physically and developmentally handicapped children; . • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; . • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; . • Discipline students according to approved policies and procedures; . • Operate various instructional, therapeutic and office equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Graduation from high school and the completion of a two year college certification program designed for Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant (AA Degree). Some positions in this class may be required to possess sign language skills. Some positions in this class may be required to possess bilingual language skills. Experience: Two years experience working with preschool and school age students preferred. Licenses and Other Requirements: . • Must have AA degree or BA degree with CA state SLPA certification; or . • Must be enrolled in an AA program working towards SLPA certification
Candidates hired into this position without their SLPA certification must have completed a minimum of 36 program semester units and be able to complete the certification within two years. Must also be NCLB compliant.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking is required to exchange information.

While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
