Description: Reporting directly to the Director of Emory Black Student Union, the Associate Director serves as a key member of the Emory Black Student Union within the broader context of the Belonging and Community Justice (BCJ).
Belonging Community and Justice is comprised of six identity spaces at Emory that serve as a hub of support for students to matriculate to and through the university and includes the Asian Student Center (ASC); Centro Latinx; the Emory Black Student Union (EBSU); Emory First; the Center for Women (CWE); and LGBT Life. BCJ promotes dynamic and cohesive learning by creating space for individual, cultural, and communal development. BCJ's value of ensuring every student belongs and graduates is central to all programming, events, and initiatives within and across the respective identity spaces.
The Emory Black Student Union is an identity space focused on supporting all Emory undergraduate, graduate and professional students including students of the African Diaspora. The Black Student Union is led by a Director and supported by an Associate Director and Assistant Director. The Emory Black Union also employs several undergraduate and graduate student staff supervised by the Associate and Assistant Directors.
This position is student-centered and responsible for supporting the Director's strategic vision and alignment of Emory resources to coordinate and assess community relevant programs and services to support access, academic progress, sense of belonging, persistence, and retention of all students who find their place in the Emory Black Student Union. Supports collaboration amongst other identity spaces within BCJ (Asian Student Center; Center for Women, Centro Latinx; Emory First; and LGBT Life) as well as colleagues across Emory Campus Life, Provost areas, and the university as a whole to develop intentional planning and implementation of programs and resources focused on students' salient and non-salient identities and intersectionality while also promoting a university culture of inclusion where students from all identities can thrive.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Student Support & Supervision
Provides and develops resources to all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students of the African Diaspora.
Serves as an advisor for student organizations supporting women and gender diverse students.
Collaborates with student organizations and campus partners leading high impact practices for women and gender diverse students.
Refers students of the African Diaspora to appropriate campus resources for support, as needed.
Meets one-on-one with all students who request assistance in collaboration with Emory Black Student Union Team.
Creates reflective spaces for African Diaspora students to celebrate their cultural identity.
Supervises, leads, mentors, and designs professional development opportunities for Emory Black Student Union professional and student staff.
Responds and supports leadership in crisis situations in accordance with university policies and protocols.
Emory and Campus Life Program Development
Develops, coordinates, and executes comprehensive and consistent Emory Black Student Union programs and services designed to support Emory's Student Flourishing Initiative.
Creates and implements outcome-based, innovative, and transformative programs that invite all students to communicate across social identities.
Coordinates efforts to welcome women and gender diverse students to Emory, including those transitioning from the Oxford Campus.
Leads the planning and implementation efforts to celebrate all African Diaspora throughout Black History Month.
Designs assessment tools to gather quantitative and qualitative program data and trends.
Creates and presents educational engagement opportunities for students in collaboration with the Director.
Supports the BCJ areas and initiatives as well as other units within Campus Life.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor or their delegate.
Communication & Marketing
Leads office newsletters content creation and implementation that is in alignment with Emory Black Student Union, BCJ, and Emory University guidelines.
Maintains accuracy and effectiveness of Emory Black Student Union website.
Markets and promotes the Emory Black Student Union, BCJ, and their programming to all students to increase participation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field, and three years of experience with campus-wide programming and supporting students of the African Diaspora, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Demonstrated experience in event management and/or student-centered programming with an emphasis on assessment of programmatic outcomes.
Demonstrated experience advising student organizations.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
Demonstrated understanding and experience with complex issues around identity and equity; intercultural communication and competence; and cultural humility.
Experience educating and training students on topics of diversity, inclusion, and difference.
Knowledge of student development theory and understanding current issues, best practices, and higher education trends related to the challenges facing students and staff from historically underrepresented communities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience with campus-wide programming and supporting students of the African Diaspora.
Leadership experience in program development, diversity programming/education.
Demonstrated experience with providing high-impact and culturally engaging educational programs.
Desire to participate in alumni engagement, fundraising and/or donor relations.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
Ability to respond to crisis situations according to organizational protocol, including evening and weekend work as required.
Strong critical and analytical thinking skills.
Exceptional oral and written communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
