Job Description
NBC News Digital is seeking a
Reporter
to join its Politics Breaking News team for NBCNews.com. The individual in this role will be one of the primary reporters responsible for picking up breaking news and covering key moments and developments from the White House, as well as on NBC News' "Meet the Press" and the other Sunday political shows. The breaking desk is the heart of the politics team on NBCNews.com. The reporters and editors cover and bring together all the latest news around campaigns, Congress, the White House, state legislatures and beyond, as well as work closely with our broadcast partners to bring the best of their coverage to the site. The hours are Sunday from 8am-4pm, and Monday-Thursday, 6am-2pm. The ideal candidate will be adept at filing multiple stories per day, seamlessly and accurately working under tight deadlines in a competitive news environment to report and file within minutes of a breaking story. Once an initial story is published, you’ll be prepared to rapidly update the story while recognizing that information still needs to be thoroughly vetted. We're also looking for someone eager to pursue follow-ups and additional angles to the news of the day — including chasing down exclusive information — and interested in pitching original ideas.
Responsibilities: Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications) and be prepared to jump on news as soon as it happens. Collect information from across NBC News and turn it into stories for the website. Write stories off of NBC News' "Meet the Press" and other Sunday shows. Write clean, fast and accurate copy. Work in close collaboration with editors and other reporters. Generate original story ideas and develop fresh angles for reported pieces on big stories of the day. Maintain broad knowledge of issues related to the White House, Congress, politics and state-level issues. Qualifications
At least 2 years of breaking news reporting experience, preferably in politics. Must have a strong interest in live coverage of news events, including live blogging, and experience working on live blogs is a plus. Strong writing and research skills, as well as editorial judgment. Broad knowledge of, and interest in, U.S. politics. Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Must be willing to work in Washington, D.C. Desired Characteristics: Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. A team player with the ability to follow direction and work independently when necessary. The ability to multitask and prioritize assignments in a rapidly moving news cycle, while also remaining detail-oriented. Eagerness to jump on news and make sure that NBCNews.com has stories that are urgent, exclusive and distinct. Additional Requirements: Hybrid : This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week. This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Salary range: $80,000 - $150,000. Additional Information
As part of our selection process, external candidates may be required to attend an in-person interview with an NBCUniversal employee at one of our locations prior to a hiring decision. NBCUniversal's policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, creed, gender, gender identity or expression, age, national origin or ancestry, citizenship, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, veteran status, membership in the uniformed services, genetic information, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
