JOB DESCRIPTION Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is one of the largest school districts in the United States, serving over 320,000 students in 500+ schools and employing nearly 44,000 people, most of them teachers. CPS has set ambitious goals to ensure that every student, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience that prepares each for success in college, career, and civic life. In order to fulfill this mission, we make three commitments to our students, their families, and all Chicagoans: academic progress, financial stability, and integrity. Six core values are embedded within these commitments – student-centered, whole child, equity, academic excellence, community partnership, and continuous learning. The Office of Early College & Career Education (ECCE) provides access and support for rigorous, college-level, hands-on, and career-focused courses; facilitates the design and implementation of high-quality STEM/STEAM learning environments; and establishes high school-to-employment pipelines that advance students' postsecondary success through earned college credit, professional credentials, and soft skills needed to succeed in college, civic life, and the 21st-century labor market. This includes leading the district's efforts in Career and Technical Education (CTE), early college-including dual credit, dual enrollment, and STEM programming at CPS' 13 Early College STEM and STEAM Schools (ECSS), and work-based learning. Job Summary: Reporting to the Manager of Early College STEM Initiatives, the Early College STEM Specialist is a 52-week school-based position that will build and facilitate the execution of key program elements of the ECSS program model, including but not limited to early college, work-based learning, and postsecondary success. The Early College STEM Specialist will cultivate and support crucial relationships with industry and college partners, working in conjunction with the school administration, industry partners, teaching staff, and CPS central office staff to provide a robust set of experiences for students that result in students graduating high school with early college credits, an increased interest in STEM/STEAM-related fields, and workplace skills for employability and success in a high wage, high skill career. Responsibilities: Provide school-level early college program support. Serve as lead and primary point for coordinating logistics of early college program with partner schools. Coordinate recruitment, engagement, and support efforts for students in early college programs. Facilitate student enrollment in dual enrollment courses at City Colleges of Chicago or dual credit courses offered by certified school faculty, ensuring strategic scheduling and alignment with student pathways. Lead or support the procurement process and administer program budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources to achieve program goals. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including school administrators, faculty, and community partners, to support the successful execution of the early college program. Collaborate with administration and facilitate support to maximize student success in early college courses through pathways development, early college credit, and certification attainment. Monitor program outcomes, such as student enrollment, retention, and completion rates, to inform continuous improvement efforts. Support school-level work-based learning experiences (e.g., internships, mentoring, job shadows). Collaborate with school leadership and industry partners to develop a strong continuum of work-based learning for all students. Serve as the primary point of contact for work-based learning experiences, conducting regular check-ins with students, teachers, and managers. Maintain a strong relationship with corporate partners and facilitate purposeful interactions and a high level of engagement. Engage existing partners and seek out new partners to provide a robust set of STEM/STEAM, career, and college learning opportunities for students. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study. Master’s degree in STEM field, Education, or related field preferred. Experience Required: A minimum of five (5) years of experience in education, non-profit or philanthropy, consulting, or a STEM-related field. Experience working on multiple, complex, and interconnected projects/workstreams simultaneously. Experience managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners, government agencies, schools, and/or community organizations. Experience in an urban school environment preferred. Other Requirements: Occasional evening and weekend work is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong understanding of early college, work-based learning, and STEM/STEAM landscape in education. Demonstrated ability to resolve issues and conflicts within the project team and manage project dependencies and critical paths. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate and communicate with school leadership, universities, partners, and other key stakeholders to facilitate successful implementation and execution of projects and initiatives. Ability to create and use robust data sets to inform planning, execution, and drive for results. Ability to prioritize, manage, and drive success on multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse school community to promote STEM/STEAM awareness and engagement through targeted partnerships and activities. Demonstrated technical skills: Microsoft Office (Excel) and data management/analysis tools. Proactive self-starter capable of navigating ambiguity; able to troubleshoot and devise targeted ad hoc solutions. Evident passion for and commitment to serving students; practical understanding of the urban district setting for school improvement; comfort with high school-aged students. Knowledge of early college, work-based learning, and STEM/STEAM scheduling and programming for both High School and Chicago Community Colleges (CCC) or the ability to quickly gain and leverage this knowledge.
