University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) School of Medicine is committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students. UC San Diego is seeking its next Chair of the Department of Family Medicine who will be an inspirational scholar, clinician, and leader with proven administrative experience to work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators within Family Medicine and beyond, fostering excellence in research and discovery, education, clinical care, and community outreach and service. The Chair is responsible for the quality of educational, clinical, and scientific programs within the department and for the overall leadership and management of the department consistent with guidelines set forth in the University of California Academic Senate Bylaws and Regulations and the UC San Diego Policy & Procedure Manual. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean, School of Medicine, the Chair will be responsible for the Department's overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs. The Chair is charged with establishing and advancing the Department's strategic direction, hiring and retaining outstanding faculty and staff, advocating for resources, and partnering with other units to advance the department's educational and scientific prominence. The Chair will be actively engaged in the intellectual research, discovery, and development of the Department, leading the planning and development of the Department's academic, clinical, and research portfolio. To be successful, the Chair must cultivate and apply interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, promoting a culture of inquiry and valuing the scholarship of discovery, application, integration, and teaching. This position will have a standard term of five years with annual performance review and goal setting. Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
(required at time of application) Earned doctoral or advanced degree (e.g. PhD, MD) from an accredited institution. 10+ year record of professional, scholarly, and educational accomplishments as a faculty member. Board Certification in Family Medicine and must have or be eligible for a California medical license. 5+ years of engagement and knowledge of an academic healthcare environment. 5+ years of analyzing, planning, and implementing strategic initiatives. 3+ years of experience aligning financial, personnel, and space resources. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading a large academic research department. Outstanding record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic environment. Organizational management experience leading financial and human resources discussions. Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Successful philanthropic and/or grant generation. Excellent communications skills and the ability to create a compelling narrative. Experience engaging with external stakeholders.
