This hourly, non-benefits eligible position is scheduled on an intermittent basis for Texas Performing Arts events. Additional hours may be possible for non-event shifts when needed. This position is renewed on an annual basis and contingent on performance and continued funding.

About Texas Performing Arts:

Texas Performing Arts is the professional arts presenting and producing program of The University of Texas at Austin. One of the largest and most active university-based performing arts centers in the U.S., Texas Performing Arts is an anchor institution in Austin's arts, cultural, and entertainment landscape. Texas Performing Arts operates venues on the UT campus including Austin's largest theater, Bass Concert Hall. Its public programs include Broadway in Austin; an international season of dance, theater, music and more; and the Texas Welcomes series of national touring artists.

Purpose

Assist the Texas Performing Arts, Fabrication and Academic Production Department by producing skilled work in the fabrication, surface preparation, painting, installation and repair of scenic elements.

Responsibilities
  • Fabricate elements according to specifications outlined in research imagery, drafting, verbal, and written instructions.

  • Construct various components using a range of materials such as wood, plastics, metal, paper, fabric, and found objects, employing hand tools and power tools such as nailers, sanders, routers, grinders, saws, and drills.

  • Perform cutting, bending, and welding of steel forms utilizing the GMAW process.

  • Engage with students in an educational environment through interaction or instructional activities as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety

  • Experience in faux and found object craft construction

  • Flexibility in project assignment

  • Demonstrated positive attitude under pressure

  • Ability to manage requests and changes

  • Self starter

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience on Film set or Theater production shops

  • Experience with furniture construction and upholstery

  • Experience with sculpture

  • Welding and metalwork experience

  • Experience in Craft problem solving

  • Detailed and artistic eye

  • Experience in Electronics / Digital fabrication

Hourly Range

$17.50 - $20.00, depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time

  • Use of manual dexterity

  • Lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Climb stairs and ladders
